The 𝟵𝘁𝗵 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹-𝗗𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹, & 𝗖𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗺𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 has officially come to a close, marking another year of dedicated service, compassion, and care for our fisherfolk communities. 💚💛

Held at the UPV Covered Court last May 1, 2026, the UP Ichthyophilic Society successfully carried out this year’s mission with the theme:
“𝙋𝙖𝙜-𝙪𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙞𝙙 𝙨𝙖 𝙇𝙖𝙬𝙤𝙙: 𝙋𝙖𝙜-𝙖𝙢𝙡𝙞𝙜 𝙨𝙖 𝙄𝙠𝙖𝙖𝙮𝙤𝙣𝙜 𝙇𝙖𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙨𝙖𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙩𝙤𝙣 𝙢𝙜𝙖 𝙈𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙞𝙨𝙙𝙖.” 🌊⚓

This initiative stands as a testament to what collective action can achieve—bringing accessible healthcare, support, and genuine service closer to those who need it most.

The 𝐔𝐏 𝐈𝐜𝐡𝐭𝐡𝐲𝐨𝐩𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐲 (𝐔𝐏𝐈𝐒) proudly recognizes the remarkable achievement of its resident member, 𝐄𝐥𝐢𝐣𝐚𝐡 𝐄𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐲𝐚 of 𝐁𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟐 - 𝐒𝐢𝐤𝐥𝐚, as he took part in the team that brought home the 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩🏅 for the University of the Philippines Visayas - College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences at the 𝟏𝟎𝐭𝐡 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐅𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐐𝐮𝐢𝐳 𝐁𝐞𝐞 held last April 22-23, 2026 at Initao, Misamis Oriental. The quiz bee competition is part of the 𝟏𝟎𝐭𝐡 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐅𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐒𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐮𝐦 held annually by the Department of Agriculture - Fisheries Biotechnology Center that gathers researchers, stakeholders, and experts to highlight recent advances and developments in fisheries biotechnology. Moreover, part of the team with him was Hikaru Chunai, a fellow undergraduate at the same college and coach, Asst. Prof. Omar Adrianne Alaman.

This achievement stands as a testament to the growing potential of fisheries biotechnology and the vital role that students have in advancing the field.

This study successfully demonstrated the potential of repurposing liquid spent wash from carrageenan processing as a biostimulant, contributing to more sustainable and efficient seaweed tissue culture practices.

𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭 𝐚𝐬 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭? 𝐘𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭!

A new study shows that liquid spent wash (LSW), a potassium hydroxide (KOH)-based by‑product usually discarded during carrageenan extraction, can boost the growth and regenerative ability of 𝘌𝘶𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘶𝘮𝘢 𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘮 and 𝘒𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘢𝘱𝘩𝘺𝘤𝘶𝘴 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘴 in tissue culture.

Instead of treating LSW as waste, this study shows that it contains nutrients and bioactive compounds that can support early growth when used at the right levels. This approach turns an industry waste stream into a useful biostimulant, opening doors for more sustainable, circular practices in seaweed farming. With global demand for carrageenan rising, innovations like this can help strengthen local aquaculture while reducing environmental impact. A small shift in how we view “waste”—but a big step toward smarter, greener seaweed production.

The stage felt as if a canvas painted remarkably by their passion and emotions for the music they played. A true display of talent, skill, and fun! Other members of the band include Avegail Vilvestre, Asher Galang, and Sealthiel Malones.
