She discussed the occurrence and increasing abundance of Sargassum blooms, highlighting both their ecological roles and the challenges they pose to coastal communities. She explained the environmental drivers such as nutrient enrichment, climate variability, and changing ocean conditions contribute to the proliferation of Sargassum. While noting negative impacts like coastal nuisance and disruption to fishing activities, she also pointed out potential benefits, including its use as fertilizer and as a source of livelihood products. She further outlined management strategies that emphasize monitoring systems, community-based responses, and the need for stronger policy and research support.

She presented the preliminary update of the GleanPhil Program, which examines gleaning fisheries as a socio-ecological system by integrating resource, user, and governance dimensions to support evidence-based management. She highlighted that gleaning is often overlooked despite its importance, facing challenges such as data gaps, weak policy recognition, ecosystem degradation, and limited understanding of gender roles. Preliminary findings show that gleaning is widely practiced across coastal habitats, particularly in seagrass areas, with participation mainly from low-income households that rely on it for food and income. The study also reveals gendered dynamics, strong livelihood dependence, and declining invertebrate resources, along with threats such as overharvesting, habitat destruction, and increasing fishing pressure.
