Hopes for direct commercial flights to Mati are gaining momentum after Philippine Airlines (PAL) formally responded to the People's Administration's request, inviting the City Mayor Joel Mayo Almario to an exploratory meeting to discuss the possibility of mounting flights to the city.

The development comes at a crucial time as the Mati Airport undergoes expansion and rehabilitation. Backed by a ₱700-million allocation under the 2026 national budget, the project aims to improve regional connectivity, reduce travel time, and support tourism and business growth in Davao Oriental.

Mayor Mayo Almario said the progress toward establishing flights to Mati may take time but is steadily moving forward.

“Hapit na pero dugay pa murag pawikan in Dahican, slow but sure. Padayon ta sa paningkamot” Mayor Almario said as he is also hopeful and confident because of the support of 2nd District Congressman Cheeno Almario and Davao Oriental Governor Nelson 'Boy' Dayanghirang.

Currently, the airport only serves chartered and light aircraft, with no regular commercial flights, making the PAL discussions a significant step toward full operationalization.

Stakeholders have emphasized that once completed, the airport is expected to serve as an alternative gateway, easing access to key destinations in Mindanao, and opening a new chapter for Mati as an emerging hub for tourism, trade, and investment. | CIO

With fuel prices climbing daily due to global tensions, the People’s Administration is stepping up to protect the pockets of both residents and visitors. During the flag-raising ceremony, March 16, 2026, Mayor Joel Mayo Almario announced plans to launch the city’s first free charging station for electric vehicles (EV). By moving toward alternative energy, the Mayor is ensuring that Matinians aren't left stranded by the rising cost of gasoline, while simultaneously opening the city’s doors wider to eco-conscious travelers.

Mayor Almario stressed that promoting tourism is just one of the countermeasures while the LGU is preparing other direct assistance and interventions specifically to the transport sector.

“Tourism has to still be strong so it can continue providing livelihood and business opportunities to the Matinians.” Mayor Almario said. The initiative serves as a direct response to the concerns of tourists, particularly those from Davao City, who hesitated to visit Mati due to a lack of charging infrastructure.

The Mayor has directed City Administrator Alan Andrada and CPDC Herville Pajaron to fast-track the study and preparation for the launch.

“Hopefully, bago mag summer naa nani. Sa kadtong mamalit og EV nga taga Mati, pero mamahalan sa bayad sa kuryente, diri [labas sa City Hall]…LIBRE para sa tanan” Mayor Almario added. | CIO
