Pedro Kipte: Hero of Masbate

Pedro Kipte fought the Spaniards in 1898 and liberated Masbate from colonial rule. A resident of Tanque in the town of Cataingan (now part of Pio. V. Corpus), Kipte, a dungganon (powerful) and was believed to have an anting-anting (amulet), established his camp in Malobago, Cataingan and defeated the police force sent from the capital town to arrest him.

In August 1898, he and his pulahan warriors, attacked Masbate, the capital town of Masbate, and dislodged the Spaniards, ending the Spanish colonial rule for more than three centuries.

Masbate is the only province liberated by the Pulahanes in Philippine history under Kipte. The Masbateños have recognized him as the local hero of Masbate.

Today, Arte Masbate mourns the passing of Tito Genova Valiente, a native of San Fernando, Ticao, Masbate, a public anthropologist, film critic, writer, and one of the most passionate advocates for Masbateño culture and arts.

We remember Sir Tito during his last visit to Masbate City, when he returned to receive the OBRA Artistic and Cultural Excellence Award. This photograph holds a quiet moment for Sir Tito as he stand by the sea, taking a long, thoughtful look at Ticao Island, a place he dearly missed and remained close to his heart.

For a short time that we have known Sir Tito, he was more than a writer or critic. He reminded us that Masbate’s stories, traditions, people, and creative expressions deserve to be seen, remembered, and spoken about.

His words helped us look more closely at where we come from.
