Before there were rock stars, there was a 𝗽𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘀𝘁! 🎹

💡| 𝗢𝗡𝗘 𝗣𝗜𝗔𝗡𝗢, 𝗢𝗡𝗘 𝗠𝗔𝗡, 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗔 𝗖𝗥𝗢𝗪𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗖𝗢𝗨𝗟𝗗𝗡’𝗧 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗧𝗔𝗜𝗡 𝗜𝗧𝗦𝗘𝗟𝗙. 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘇 𝗟𝗶𝘀𝘇𝘁, born on this day in 𝟭𝟴𝟭𝟭, is often called the world’s first 𝙧𝙤𝙘𝙠 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙧. In 𝟭𝟴𝟰𝟬, he advertised his London concerts as “𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹𝘀,” a word previously used for dramatic readings, and helped create the modern 𝙨𝙤𝙡𝙤 𝙥𝙞𝙖𝙣𝙤 𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙞𝙩𝙖𝙡. His performances drew such frenzied crowds that the poet 𝗛𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗛𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗲 coined the term “𝗟𝗶𝘀𝘇𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗮” in 𝟭𝟴𝟰𝟰.

💡| 𝗢𝗡𝗘 𝗞𝗜𝗡𝗚, 𝗢𝗡𝗘 𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗟𝗘, 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗔𝗕𝗢𝗨𝗧 𝟮𝟴𝟮 𝗟𝗔𝗪𝗦. Around 𝟭𝟳𝟱𝟰 𝗕𝗖𝗘, 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗛𝗮𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗶, the sixth king of Babylon’s First Dynasty, issued one of the most famous legal codes in ancient history. Its laws covered 𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙙𝙚, 𝙛𝙖𝙢𝙞𝙡𝙮, 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙩𝙮, and 𝙘𝙧𝙞𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙟𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙚, and were carved on a tall diorite stele for public reference. It is best known for “an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth,” but this strict retaliation mainly applied between 𝙨𝙤𝙘𝙞𝙖𝙡 𝙚𝙦𝙪𝙖𝙡𝙨. Punishments for lower-statusa people often differed, usually settled by payments of silver. Today, the code helps historians understand how early societies shaped 𝙡𝙖𝙬, 𝙟𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙚, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙨𝙤𝙘𝙞𝙖𝙡 𝙤𝙧𝙙𝙚𝙧.

💡| 𝗔 𝗟𝗢𝗦𝗧 𝗟𝗔𝗡𝗚𝗨𝗔𝗚𝗘 𝗨𝗡𝗟𝗢𝗖𝗞𝗘𝗗? The 𝗥𝗼𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗮 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲 carries the same decree from 𝟭𝟵𝟲 𝗕𝗖𝗘 in three scripts: 𝙀𝙜𝙮𝙥𝙩𝙞𝙖𝙣 𝙝𝙞𝙚𝙧𝙤𝙜𝙡𝙮𝙥𝙝𝙨, 𝘿𝙚𝙢𝙤𝙩𝙞𝙘, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝘼𝙣𝙘𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙂𝙧𝙚𝙚𝙠. Since scholars could still read Greek, it provided a crucial clue to understanding ancient Egyptian writing. In 𝟭𝟴𝟮𝟮 , 𝗝𝗲𝗮𝗻-𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗻ç𝗼𝗶𝘀 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 announced his decipherment of hieroglyphs, marking a major breakthrough in the study of ancient Egypt! ⏳
