Since 1999, the Firefly Brigade has been promoting the bicycle for clean air and sustainable communities. In many ways this volunteer organization contributed to encouraging more people on bicycles, delivering the urgent message to our government to address pollution and congestion, and integrate the bicycle in national development programs as well as in the local development programs of various c
ities and communities. In the course of this advocacy work, it has successfully contributed to the development of the bicycle industry and businesses in the country and has also added to the popularity of bicycling not only as a sport but as transport and pleasurable daily activity. The Firefly Brigade has participated and actively engaged various government agencies in implementing the Clean Air Act of 1999 and entered into partnerships with key public and private organizations such as the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Department of Interior and Local Government, the Department of Transportation and Communication, the Clean Air Commission, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, Clean Air Asia, Partnership for Clean Air, the Earth Day Network and Local Government Units such as Marikina, Pasig, Quezon City, San Juan, Paranaque, Manila, Makati, Navotas, among many others. On a nationwide scale, the Firefly Brigade has also inspired similar-minded and spirited organizations in Bacolod, Baguio, Batangas, Davao, Iloilo, Laoag, General Santos City, Puerto Princesa, and others. The Firefly Brigade’s strongest asset is its swarm of volunteers and members that carry out an array of activities to pedal its mission across.
