Stand with the people of Dupax del Norte, N. Viscaya vs mining! Revoke Woggle Mining Corp.'s exploration permit!
Marikina Kontra Agos, an environmental campaign network opposing destructive activities inside and around the Upper Marikina Watershed, firmly stands with the people of Dupax del Norte (DDN) in Nueva Viscaya in their struggle against foreign-backed mining and land-grabbing.
Even as we are hundreds of kilometers from the lands desperately sought for mineral exploration, we extend our solidarity to the people of DDN as we share a common advocacy to stop environmental destruction and resist foreign plunder of our lands.
It is deplorable that the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has granted an exploration permit to British firm Woggle Mining Corporation over 3,100 hectares of land in Nueva Viscaya, and has continued to play deaf to the cries of the people. Amid the mad rush for mineral ores, the government has sadly sided with big mining interests instead of defending our mountains, farmlands, rivers and ancestral domain.
We commend the farmers, indigenous communities and their supporters in their barricade to resist the environmental plunder and destruction of their farmlands and ancestral homelands despite the blatant use of force and intimidation by the police. We draw inspiration from them as we seek to amplify our campaign to stop the planned wind turbines project in Rizal and against the active mining and quarrying operations around the Upper Marikina Watershed.
In the province of Rizal alone, the Marcos Jr. administration has renewed over 10 mineral production sharing agreements (MPSAs) since 2022. The Vena Energy wind turbine project, which will be constructed along the delicate karst formation in the Upper Marikina Watershed and across the mountain ranges in Rizal, also threatens to undo existing conservation efforts and open vast tracts of land for destruction. The recently opened Wawa dam also continues to place nearby communities at risk of flooding during the rainy season.
We call on all residents of Marikina and nearby cities to stand in solidarity with the people of DDN and support the offline and online campaign until Woggle Mining Corporation's exploration permit is revoked. In the long term, we must unite to fight back policies that allow rampant mining operations and other development aggression projects to extract resources meant for future Filipino generations.
