What’s in a Name?
-A Reflection on Identity, Purpose, and Legacy
“What’s in a name?”
At first, a name may seem like nothing more than a word we are given at birth. Yet, our name carries meaning, identity, and a story. It is how people recognize us, remember us, and eventually associate us with the kind of person we have become.
During the Values Formation, Pastor Jong began with a simple but meaningful activity. Each resident was asked to introduce himself and describe an adjective beginning with the first letter of their name. Although it appeared to be a simple icebreaker, it made us reflect on a deeper question: How do we see ourselves, and how do we want others to see us?
The way we describe ourselves can create an impression on others. In many ways, this is similar to applying for a job. We present our strengths, abilities, experiences, and accomplishments because we want others to see our worth and choose us. But life is more than simply presenting our best qualities to be accepted by others.
The more important question is: Are we truly becoming the person we claim to be?
The Bible also reminds us that names can carry significant meaning. There are people whose names reflected their circumstances, character, or calling. There were also individuals whose names were changed when God began transforming their lives. Abram became Abraham. Jacob became Israel. Simon became Peter. These people were not perfect. They made mistakes, experienced failures, and struggled with their weaknesses. Yet, God did not allow their past to be the final definition of who they were. Through His grace, He transformed them and gave them a new identity and purpose.
This reminds me that our past does not have to define our future. We may have made mistakes, experienced failures, or carried labels that others have placed upon us. But God sees beyond our weaknesses. He sees the person we can become when we allow Him to work in our lives. His grace gives us the opportunity to change, grow, and become better versions of ourselves.
Pastor Jong's challenge about how we want to be remembered is perhaps one of the most important questions we can ask ourselves. When our names are mentioned someday, what will people remember about us?
Our positions may eventually be replaced. Our titles may be forgotten. Our achievements and credentials may no longer be remembered. Even the things we worked so hard to accomplish may eventually fade with time. But the way we treated people, the kindness we showed, the encouragement we gave, and the love we shared can remain in the hearts of others long after we are gone.
A person's greatest legacy is not always found in what he or she accomplished, but in the lives that were touched and changed because of his or her presence.
This reflection challenges me to look beyond how I want to be recognized and instead ask how I can become a blessing to others. Am I someone who brings encouragement or discouragement? Do people feel valued when they are with me? Do my words give hope? Does my presence reflect kindness, compassion, forgiveness, and love? More importantly, does my life reflect the goodness of God?
We may not be able to choose the name that was given to us, but we can choose what that name will eventually mean to the people who know us. Every day, through our choices, actions, and relationships, we are writing the story behind our names.
Therefore, I want my name to be remembered not because of my position, achievements, or credentials, but because I lived with purpose and treated people with genuine love. I want my life to be a reflection of God's grace—a life that may not be perfect, but one that continually seeks to grow, serve, forgive, and love.
At the end of our lives, the question will not simply be, “What did you achieve?” but perhaps, “Whose life became better because you were there?”
May our names become more than just names. May they become reminders of God's goodness, love, and grace working through our lives. And when our names are spoken long after we are gone, may people remember not merely what we had, what position we held, or what we accomplished, but the love we gave, the lives we touched, and the goodness of God that we reflected.🙏😇
