Sa isang demokrasya, ang katahimikan ay hindi kailanman neutral, madalas, ito ay pabor sa mga nasa kapangyarihan. Dahil dito, mahalaga ang aktibismo bilang paraan ng pagpapahayag ng saloobin ng mamamayan. Hindi ito simpleng ingay o panggugulo, kundi isang mahalagang bahagi ng isang lipunang may malasakit. Sa Pilipinas, ang aktibismo ay hindi hiwalay sa demokrasya, ito mismo ang tumulong sa paghubog at pagpapatibay nito.

Makikita ito sa kasaysayan ng bansa, tulad ng First Quarter Storm at People Power Revolution. Sa mga panahong ito, ipinaglaban ng mamamayan ang kanilang mga karapatan sa pamamagitan ng sama-samang pagkilos. Ang kalayaan sa pagsasalita, pagtitipon, at pagkwestiyon sa pamahalaan ay hindi basta ibinigay, ito ay bunga ng pakikibaka. Ipinapakita nito na ang aktibismo ay mahalagang instrumento sa pagkamit ng mga karapatang tinatamasa natin ngayon.

Gayunpaman, sa kasalukuyan, ang aktibismo ay nahaharap sa ibaโ€™t ibang hamon. Isa na rito ang red-tagging, kung saan ang mga indibidwal o grupo ay iniuugnay sa mga rebeldeng organisasyon nang walang sapat na ebidensya. Dahil dito, nagkakaroon ng takot ang mga tao na magsalita o makilahok sa mga isyung panlipunan. Ang red-tagging ay hindi lamang isang akusasyon, ito ay nagdudulot ng panganib sa buhay, kalayaan, at seguridad ng isang tao.

Ayon sa desisyon sa kasong Deduro v. Vinoya, nakilala na ang red-tagging ay isang seryosong banta na maaaring magdulot ng pinsala sa mga mamamayan. Ipinapakita nito na ang ganitong gawain ay hindi dapat balewalain, sapagkat pinapahina nito ang pundasyon ng demokrasya. Kapag ang mga tao ay natatakot magsalita, nawawala ang espasyo para sa malayang talakayan at pananagutan.

Mahalagang tandaan na ang maraming pagbabago sa lipunan, tulad ng karapatan ng mga manggagawa at pagkakapantay-pantay ng kasarian, ay nakamit dahil sa aktibismo. Noong una, maraming aktibista ang tinawag na radikal, ngunit kalaunan ay kilala silang mga tagapagtaguyod ng pagbabago. Kung sila ay nanahimik noon, maaaring hindi natin matatamasa ang mga karapatang mayroon tayo ngayon.

Sa kasalukuyan, patuloy na kinakaharap ng Pilipinas ang ibaโ€™t ibang suliranin tulad ng korapsyon, hindi pagkakapantay-pantay, at paglaganap ng maling impormasyon. Ang mga problemang ito ay hindi basta mawawala kung walang kikilos. Nangangailangan ito ng pakikilahok ng mamamayan, kritikal na pag-iisip, at aktibong pakikibahagi sa mga isyu ng lipunan.

Sa huli, ang aktibismo ay hindi kalaban ng estado kundi isang mahalagang bahagi ng demokrasya. Ito ang nagsisilbing boses ng mamamayan at nagpapaalala sa mga nasa kapangyarihan ng kanilang responsibilidad. Ang tunay na panganib ay hindi ang pagsasalita ng mga tao, kundi ang kanilang pananahimik. Kaya naman, mahalagang ipagpatuloy ang pagpapahayag ng saloobin at pakikilahok sa lipunan upang mapanatili ang isang buhay at makatarungang demokrasya.

Today, ๐๐ฅ๐š๐œ๐ค ๐’๐š๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐๐š๐ฒ, we sit in the quiet between sorrow and hope. ๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ

After the crucifixion of Jesus Christ on Good Friday, His body lay in the tombโ€”a day marked by silence, mourning, and waiting. Scripture tells us this was a time when the world seemed still, as His followers grieved and held on to His promises.
