PSSE - National University Student Chapter PSSE-NUSC is an RSO for Environmental and Sanitary Engineering Students of National University

Philippine Society of Sanitary Engineers-National University Student Chapter (PSSE-NUSC) is a registered student organization in National University-Manila. PSSE-NUSC sees its members as potential seeds who can become the next visionary engineers capable of transforming the community while equipping with the principles of Environmental and Sanitary Engineering disciplines. Major green engineering reforms are sight through social, cultural, academic, professional, and environmental actions that gear towards promoting Sustainable Development.

Happy National Heroes Day to all the brave souls who fought for our freedom, shaped our history, and continue to inspire our nation!

In celebration of National Heroes day, on this day the Philippine Society of Sanitary Engineers - National University Student ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿค we would like to share a story of our National Hero Dr. Jose Rizal and his contributions that are adjacent to the Sanitary Engineering Discipline.

Dr. Jose Rizalโ€™s Exploits in Dapitan
โ€‹Beyond his brilliance as a writer, physician, and national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal also laid pioneering groundwork for public health and environmental infrastructure during his four-year exile in Dapitan from 1892 to 1896. Confined to a remote community facing severe sanitation challenges, Rizal transformed his multidisciplinary knowledge into practical engineering solutions that directly protected and uplifted the local population.

โ€‹During his time there, Rizal famously tackled the malaria epidemic by organizing the community to drain the vast, mosquito-infested marshlands surrounding the town. By eliminating stagnant water sources, he drastically reduced the transmission of vector-borne diseases and drastically improved public health outcomes for the residents.

โ€‹His engineering contributions didn't stop at drainage. Recognizing the desperate need for potable water, Rizal designed and constructed an intricate gravity-fed water supply system. Using limited local resources, including stones, bricks, mortar, and bamboo pipe, he channeled fresh water from a distant mountain spring all the way into the town center, providing clean, accessible drinking water to households that previously relied on contaminated sources. Furthermore, he engineered a public lighting system, installing coconut oil lamps to illuminate the dark streets and town plaza.

โ€‹Rizalโ€™s work in Dapitan stands as a powerful reminder that engineering, public health, and nation-building go hand in hand. As we celebrate National Heroes Day, we honor not only those who fought for independence, but also visionaries like Rizal who built healthier, safer, and more sustainable communities from the ground up.
