It's called 'the wood of the gods'. It is the resin, formed on particular infected trees, that lends its heavenly scent to perfumes and incense.

But there's a whiff of trouble in the Philippines, where the illegal harvesting and trade of this fragrant resin - agarwood - is putting the special trees they are taken from, at risk.

Metropolitan Manila is a large, bustling city, characterized by industrial, commercial, and residential infrastructure. Like other urban dwellers, humans of Metro Manila live side by side with animals that are often unnoticed and underappreciated. Forty-five of these species, including seven amphibians, twenty-two reptiles, and sixteen mammals, are introduced in this book.

This field guide features general information on the life history and ecology of each animal group, including diagrams illustrating relevant features to look out for. A beautiful full-color photograph of each species is provided, as well as the scientific and common names, and information on descriptive physical characteristics, habitats and habits, and conservation status. The book also gives an overview of urban biodiversity, its role in contributing to the health of the city and the factors that threaten its existence. Tips for wildlife observation and creating wildlife-friendly spaces are also provided.

Wild City: A Photographic Guide to Amphibians, Mammals, and Reptiles of Metro Manila is the first of its kind in the Philippines. It is an invitation for city dwellers to experience, explore, appreciate, and hopefully conserve the nature around them.

PALAWAN, TAYTAY, something is wrong when the government agency entrusted to stop illegal logging goes to an NGO to report loggers and asks the latter to do something about it. Something is wrong, when that NGO acts on the report of that government agency and catches the chainsaw for it. Yet that is precisely what happened on July 13, 2023, as PNNI paraenforcers confiscate the reported chainsaw responsible for cutting Nato forest trees and covering these with Mangium planted species in order to evade discovery in checkpoints. This is what Palawan looks like in the inside; not the white sand beaches, the tourist resorts, the underground rivers, and certainly not the awards for good governance or most beautiful island. Something is wrong when there are more trainings and workshops than there are forest rangers in its forests; when there are more speeches and stories of recognition than there are confiscations and foot patrols; when there are more selfies and posts to save Palawan's forests than there are funds for the poor. Something is terribly wrong.

Philippine Pangolin

Happy World Pangolin Day!

Your joins the rest of the world in celebrating ! This annual celebration has been commemorated every third Saturday of February since 2012. Pangolins are scaly mammals famous for their exceptional appearance. Their skin is armored with scales made of keratin similar to your fingernails. By curling their body like a ball, these scales serve as their protective cover when in danger.

Unlike most mammals, pangolins do not have teeth and only rely on small rocks inside their mouth to grind food. There are eight extant species of pangolins globally and one of these is endemic in Palawan. Interestingly, the Palawan pangolin has the most scales among all species.

Palawan pangolin is locally known as balintong in tagalog. It is one of the Critically Endangered mammals in the Philippines and among the most trafficked mammals in the world because of its meat and scales. Their population dramatically decreased in the last two decades because of habitat loss and excessive hunting. Because of this, national and international legislations race against time to save and protect these cute mammals.

There is still hope in saving these wonderful creatures! Check the official website of World Pangolin Day to help these mammals and their habitat: www.worldpangolinday.org
