Association of Geologists and Geological Engineers of Mapua

Association of Geologists and Geological Engineers of Mapua AGGEM is a recognized organization of Mapúa University composed of GEO/GSE students and alumni. Founded through the efforts of Mr. Duquillo, Azriel Karl M.

The Association of Geologists and Geological Engineers of Mapúa (AGGEM) is a distinguished non-stock, non-profit organization based at Mapúa University in Intramuros, Manila. It serves as an exclusive community for aspiring geologists and geological engineers. Clement Fajardo, the inaugural chairman, AGGEM successfully unified GEO and GSE students under one banner. The organization was initially g

uided by the expertise of Dr. Karlo Queano, a celebrated and reputed geologist in the Philippines, who served as its first faculty adviser. In its early years, AGGEM achieved significant successes, thanks to the dedication and hard work of its pioneering officers. Notable accomplishments during this period include the induction of members at La Mesa Eco Park, the organization of the Geohazards and Mitigation Seminar, the hosting of a Science Quiz Show, and the coordination of an educational field trip to Palawan. These events not only marked milestones for AGGEM but also set a high standard for future endeavors, establishing a strong foundation for the organization's ongoing growth and impact. 𝐆𝐞𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬! 🏗️ Before any construction begins, geologists assess the ground—checking soil, rock types, stability, and groundwater—to help ensure structures are safe, sturdy, and ready to withstand natural forces like earthquakes. Smart planning starts from the ground up! 🌍💡

𝗚𝗘𝗢𝗟𝗢𝗚𝗜𝗖 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗖𝗘𝗦𝗦
Understanding geologic processes like plate tectonics, weathering, and erosion is vital in engineering. These natural forces affect structures, so engineers rely on geology to gain insights into the terrain and make smarter, safer building decisions.

𝗚𝗘𝗢𝗧𝗘𝗖𝗛𝗡𝗜𝗖𝗔𝗟 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗦𝗜𝗧𝗘 𝗜𝗡𝗩𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗚𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡
Before building anything, it’s crucial to understand what’s beneath the surface. Geologists use geophysical surveys and borehole drilling to assess if the ground is safe for construction. Knowing how soil and rocks will react to a structure’s weight helps ensure a stable and secure foundation.

𝗚𝗘𝗢𝗛𝗔𝗭𝗔𝗥𝗗𝗦 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗠𝗜𝗧𝗜𝗚𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡
Geology is essential in engineering because it helps identify hazards and reduce risks. By studying the ground, geologists can spot threats like earthquakes, landslides, sinkholes, subsidence, and flooding, making structures safer and more resilient.

𝗛𝗬𝗗𝗥𝗢𝗚𝗘𝗢𝗟𝗢𝗚𝗬
Geologists play a crucial role in checking for water tables beneath construction sites. Groundwater can make or break a project—if not considered, it can lead to soil liquefaction, foundation erosion, flooding, or unstable excavations.
