It’s been a month since KaLakaran but we’re still reflecting on the lessons that were shared by our speakers. 🌱♻️

Here are some key takeaways from the event that we hope students learned from and will continue to carry in their everyday lives. 💡

Let’s keep taking small steps toward a cleaner and more sustainable community!

Last September 8, Manuel L. Quezon High School in Caloocan turned into a space for learning and sharing of thoughts as we held KaLakaran: Deep-Dive in Waste Management Solutions for Communities.

A big thank you to Sir Edel S. Garingan of GAIA Asia Pacific (Zero Waste Asia) for sharing his knowledge on Zero Waste—a vision that reminds us that waste is not just “thrown away,” it goes somewhere, and it impacts people, communities, and the planet. Zero Waste matters because it pushes us to rethink how we produce, consume, and dispose, making sure our actions protect both our environment and our future. Like what Sir Edel shared, it can start with simple steps—setting up a Zero Waste School project, learning about the Zero Waste Hierarchy, and practicing mindful habits. Every small action builds toward systemic change.

We’re also grateful to Ms. Shar Mae Gayangos of Ecoshoppe PH , who showed us how businesses can be powerful allies in climate-conscious living—from promoting eco-friendly products, to engaging young people, to building partnerships that support community efforts. What stood out for us was her commitment to inclusivity and education: through her community library, she makes knowledge on sustainability accessible to all, and is now working with PWD groups to bring more voices into the conversation. Her message is clear—when people are equipped with knowledge, they can make better choices for themselves, their communities, and the planet.

We’d also like to thank Manuel L. Quezon High School for warmly welcoming this project and giving students the chance to take part in meaningful conversations and activities on sustainability. We’re especially excited to see the creativity that will shine through in the upcoming upcycling contest—we can’t wait to see the results!

KaLakaran reminded us that building a cleaner, more sustainable future is not just the work of one sector—it is collective work. From schools, to businesses, to communities, each of us has a role to play. And together, we can make Zero Waste and climate-conscious living not just ideals, but realities. 💚

To the students who joined us—you are not just the audience, you are the changemakers. Remember that your choices, your voice, and your leadership matter more than ever.

We’re excited to bring KaLakaran: Deep-Dive in Waste Management Solutions for Communities to Manuel L. Quezon High School, Caloocan City this September 8, 2025, at 10:00AM–12:00NN in collaboration with Caloocan Young Leaders Initiative and Ecoshoppe PH

This initiative focuses on waste segregation education and practical community-based solutions—from student-led waste segregation, bokashi composting for the school garden, to an upcycling contest that turns recyclables into something useful and creative.

We look forward to the active participation of the school community in making this effort inclusive and impactful.

See you there!

Manila continues to face challenges in managing its growing waste. From collection systems to everyday disposal habits, it’s clear that both the government and the public play an important role in building long-term solutions.

Progress starts when efficient systems and responsible practices work hand in hand as waste management is a shared responsibility.

What small step do you think can make a big difference in improving Manila’s waste management?

Caloocan City is a first-class, highly-urbanized city in Metro Manila and the 4th most populated city in the Philippines with over 1.6 million (PSA, 2020) residents spread across 193 barangays.

But with this rapid growth comes a pressing challenge—solid waste management.

Despite policies like banning non-biodegradable plastics and styrofoam, weak enforcement and the city’s sheer population density make the problem harder to solve. Communities face issues like poor segregation, foul odors from mixed wastes, and even health risks from hazardous fumes.

Caloocan’s situation highlights a bigger question: how can we strengthen waste management in our cities and make solutions work at the community level?🤔

Quezon City may be leading in size, but waste management still faces big hurdles:
♻️ Inconsistent collection
♻️ Weak segregation at source
♻️ Gaps in public awareness and behavior

These challenges show us that policies alone aren’t enough—consistent action and community involvement are key.

What do you think Quezon City (or even your own community) can do to manage waste better? Share your thoughts below!

Why does circular economy matters?♻️

Because it means less waste in our landfills and oceans, more resources saved, and new opportunities for communities.

By keeping materials in use longer, we protect our environment, cut pollution, and open up opportunities for greener jobs and businesses.

What’s one change you’d like to see in how we handle waste in the Philippines?

Two decades. One goal: less waste.
Yet somehow… the trash keeps growing. 🚮

We can still turn it around by starting with the little things:
✅ Bring your own bag and bottle
✅ Segregate waste at home
✅ Support products made from recycled materials

Small actions add up. Share your tips below and let’s inspire each other!
