I sat in front of the camera, mouth slightly opened from awe, hands clasped, mind blank. No sound came out of my mouth, no matter how hard I tried. I sat there with a hopeful soul, expecting... uncertaintiesโฆ Will my questions finally be heard? Or will they stay unanswered?
For years, the depth and significance of journalism and the importance of voice have been undermined and debated across generations. Many people have made valid points on both sides, and the new, influential show YSpeak 2.0 returns to showcase the beauty of engaging with today's pressing topics.
YSpeak 2.0 is a youth-oriented show, a revival of the classic 2004 show โYSpeak,โ which aimed to foster healthy discourse on relevant issues.
The show opens with the question of whether influencers should be held to the same standards as journalists. Both sides make valid points. One side argues that influencers have large platforms; therefore, their wider reach entails greater responsibility and accountability for the information they share. The other side argues that journalists are simply not the same as influencers; they follow different standards and training, which differentiates the quality they bring to the table. In light of this issue, the topic highlights the journalists' efforts to restore public trust.
Another topic that should not be overlooked is the discourse on whether Filipinos should speak out publicly on political and social issues. The debate over speaking out and the significance of silence also arises. Both sides carry the meaning behind every answer: that speaking out means being a voice for the oppressed and a form of collective action for change, and that silence can also help reduce the spread of misinformation. This brings us back to the thought, "Would misinformation still be prevalent if all voices were given a chance to be heard? If not, would silence always be acceptable as an answer?"
To this day, we may still be looking for the answer, or we may have already found it but chose to look the other way. Given the current situation, the most beneficial approach is to learn, discern, and act. To empathise is to listen, and to be a voice is to represent the people you empathise with.
So, if I may be asked again, would I want my questions to be heard? If so, one must listen and be a voice for hope and change.
