Finish Well with Faith: Jacob and Joseph Conclude Their Lives with Order, Vision, and Peace (Genesis 48-50)

As Jacob and Joseph near the end of their lives in Egypt, they leave behind more than an inheritance; they leave a pattern for how to trust the LORD to the very end.

In this message, we walk through Genesis 48-50 to see three marks of a life that finishes well:

🔹 ORDER (Gen. 48) — Jacob entrusts his legacy to the LORD, blessing Ephraim and Manasseh and adopting them as his own sons, showing that God's promises, not human strength, are the foundation for what we leave behind.

🔹 VISION (Gen. 49) — Jacob entrusts his family's future to the LORD, speaking prophetic truth over each of his twelve sons, from hard rebukes to the Messianic promise given through Judah.

🔹 PEACE (Gen. 50) — Joseph entrusts his relationships to the LORD, forgiving his brothers and declaring, "You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good" (50:20).

Together, these three chapters answer the question: What does it look like to trust God, not just in crisis, but all the way to the end of your story?

Before Yosef (Joseph) can reconcile with his brothers, one final test stands in the way. Genesis 44 is the hinge chapter that sets up the forgiveness and reconciliation of Genesis 45—but to get there, the brothers face a haunting question: will they abandon another son of Rakel to save themselves, just as they once did to Yosef?

In this message, we walk through:
🔹 The Fear of Losing (44:1-17)—Yosef's hidden fear, and the brothers' unexpected loyalty
🔹 The Sacrifice in Losing (44:18-34)—Yehudah's transformation, and his offer to become a slave in Binyamin's place

Yehudah—the very brother who once sold Yosef into slavery—now stands ready to become a slave himself, to save the brother he once helped betray. This is a story of fear, guilt, humility, and a promise finally kept.

The Beginning of the Yosef Saga (Genesis 37)

Of all the 12 sons of Ya'aqov, God had chosen Yosef to receive the birthright from Re'uven, the eldest son, through dreams. Even with when Ya'aqov protected Yosef with along garment as status, his brothers dared to kill him—almost—but eventually sold their brother to their distant cousins, with which they had a feud.

People live as if there is no day of reckoning before the Maker and Moral Law Giver. They deny he exists or that the Moral Law objectively exists. How should we deal with such objections?

Letter to the Galatians 4:12-31

Paul was willing to go back to the the churches in Galatia to proclaim the Gospel to them against until the Christ is formed in them as His body. He also used an allegory between Sarah/Isaac and Hagar/Ishmael to explain to them that they were the children of the God and they out to kick out the Judaizers.

Paul claims that the Gospel he proclaimed came from the Lord Jesus himself, who also directly commissioned him to be an apostle for the non-Jews. He did not learn it from any believer. Naturally, people became suspicious of him. However, he said that he met with the key apostles in Jerusalem twice to present his Gospel to them. This led to them to have the right hand of fellowship in reaching out to the Jews and the non-Jews alike, while rejecting the false gospel, which demanded compliance with the Law of Moses.

Whether we like it or not, whether we believe/subscribe to it or not, God’s moral law reigns supreme and we are all under it. We will be judged based on his law, not on what you think they should be.

Romans 2 (ESV)
⁶ He will render to each one according to his works:
¹¹ For God shows no partiality.

• You may believe in a set of moral values and think God accepts them. No! His righteousness (not mine, not yours) remains the same. He’s not going to change his standards to accommodate you. He will judge the unrighteous for their unrighteousness.

Romans 1 (ESV)
¹⁷ For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, "The righteous shall live by faith.”
¹⁸ For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.

• However, God loves you that He wants you to turn to him and his righteousness, not Him turning/accepting your beliefs on your version of righteousness and unrighteousness.

Romans 3 (ESV)
²⁴ and [all] are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,

• You need to be redeemed from these false beliefs! Redemption also involves delivering you from false moral standards. So do not be a fool in believing that the world’s morality is acceptable to God:

Romans 1 (ESV)
²² Claiming to be wise, they became fools, ²³ and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things. ²⁴ Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves,

• If you hold on to unrighteousness and you are living in it, call out to Jesus and be delivered from the power of immorality:

Romans 7 (ESV)
²⁴ Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? ²⁵ Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!

Romans 10 (ESV)
¹³ For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

• You may have judged those who proclaim the righteousness of God, when you yourself are not the judge and unrighteous too. Only God is the righteous judge.

Romans 3 (ESV)
⁴ By no means! Let God be true though every one were a liar, as it is written, “That you may be justified in your words, and prevail when you are judged.”

• You may want to shoot the messenger, but the messenger does not set what righteousness is. God does based on his nature. God is righteous.

Will you able to stand before the righteous God? Through Jesus' righteousness, you can (Romans 5:18)!
