Dear CAMP Alumni,

Hope you are all safe and well despite Tyhoon Carina’s unprecedented blow. 🌧️

Today, the CAMP College Graduation had to be suspended due to massive flooding within Metro Manila warranting the declaration of a State of Calamity by the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG). ⚠️

With the heavy rains and massive flooding in Metro Manila and nearby provinces today, members of the CAMP community (students and staff) have been adversely affected, and need our help! 🙏🏽🙏🏻🙏🏾

A Father's Experience with
Augmentative Alternative Communication (edited)

A week ago, C must have been watching Yaya F put things into the pantry.

On Saturday, Yaya F was off. C came up to me, pointed to the pantry, and pulled at me to enter. She normally does this when she thinks there is candy inside.

I ignored her, telling her there was no candy… but she was adamant, trying to verbalise a word I did not comprehend at that moment.

She looked frustrated that I did not understand. To my surprise, she went to her room, came out with the IPad, opened the Touch chat app and found what she wanted. She pressed “want guitar". Wow, when I opened the cabinet, I found our old guitar.

I probably shed a happy tear or two… thinking how she made that effort to communicate to get to play the guitar. Bravo👏👏👍❤️Great work Team C!!

(Note: Solving communication breakdowns is one of the objectives of the AAC. We encourage a child to use the device when she cannot be understood or if she has difficulty finding the words. This significantly decreases frustration and improves quality of life.)

To all of you who shared our Oct. 10 post calling for donations, thank you! To those of you who reached deep into your hearts and pockets, so that 23 UP-CAMP students, our future therapists, may have a laptop to use for their online classes, a big THANK YOU!!! It took the UP-CAMP Foundation 17 days to raise P780,624.96.

The words of Malcolm Gladwell today ring true: "Look at the world around you. It may seem like an immovable, implacable place. It is not. With the slightest push - in just the right place - it can be tipped.
