REBOLUSYON NI BONIFACIO, ISULONG MO BAGONG TIPO!
This upcoming November 30, we celebrate the 162nd birthday of G*t. Andres Bonifacio: the injustices he resisted against the Spaniards during the Philippine Revolution is what we the youth still experience today. Although, the revolution he began remains incomplete, that the U.S. occupation that followed Spanish rule was exploitative, it also transformed Philippine society in ways that reshaped our social and economic conditions. Many of the problems rooted in our past still persist, yet the conditions in which we fight them have changed.
Today, the injustice we experience is shown in many forms. Activists are silenced through red-tagging forums and subpoenas issued by the PNP. Urban poor and peasant communities are subjected to militarization and surveillance disguised as โsecurity.โ The 99% face worsening hardships as prices of basic commodities continue to rise. Not every politician involved in the flood control scandal has been put behind bars. These are not isolated issues, they form part of a rotten system that thrives on fear, impunity, and the suppression of peopleโs rights.
Amid this political repression, democracy has weakened. Freedom of expression, right to assembly, and dissent are under attack. And the people fighting for justice: peasants, workers, Indigenous communities, and environmental defenders, are branded criminals or terrorists treated as threats rather than citizens who have basic rights.
Many of the same problemsโeconomic injustice, foreign interference, and social inequality persist. There is now an opportunity to carry forward the revolutionary through a national-democratic viewpoint: to envision a Philippine society not controlled by oligarchs and foreign interests, but by genuine sovereignty, social justice, and equality. This is a real alternative to the rotten system.
If Bonifacio were alive today, he would surely be proud of the youth and ordinary Filipinos who stand up against injustice, inequality, and exploitationโthose who believe that true freedom and democracy are worth fighting for.
