MARIKINA. The air in Tumana Barangay Hall buzzed with energy as 22 women, youth and PWDs settled into plastic chairs. Most of them clutched brand-new crochet hooks for the first time in their lives. This marked the opening day of Hooking Hope, Crafty Tefy Crochetโs ambitious free crochet training program aimed at transforming marginalized women, youth and PWDs into skilled artisans capable of earning sustainable income.
โI have never held one of these before,โ a middle-aged participant admitted. She examined the aluminum hook with uncertainty, mirroring the expressions of most participants who enrolled in the month-long intensive training. โBut if this can help me earn, I am willing to learn.โ
The first weekโs curriculum focused on foundation techniques that would later become the building blocks of marketable products like crochet stuffed animals and keychains. Crafty Tefy Crochet Trainer Euddien Maritoria began with the slip knot, a seemingly simple loop that proved challenging for hands.
โMake a loop, pull through, tighten but not too tight,โ Euddien demonstrated patiently, his voice carrying over the concentrated silence. Around the group, they fumbled with yarn, some succeeding immediately while others required multiple attempts to master this basic starting point.
The breakthrough moment came when participants progressed to the chain stitch, the fundamental technique that forms the foundation of all crochet work. One of three intermediate crocheters, a senior, in the group, spontaneously moved her chair closer to her struggling seat mates. โHere, let me show you,โ she offered, her hands guiding the beginnerโs hook through the proper motions. โYarn over, pull through, see? Youโre getting it.โ
This organic mentoring quickly spread throughout the room. Within an hour, the workshop transformed from individual struggle into collaborative learning, with experienced participants naturally gravitating toward those who needed extra help. The chains growing longer mixed with encouraging laughter and gentle corrections.
โThe most beautiful part is not the stitches they are learning,โ observed Stephanie Vicente, Crafty Tefy Crochet co-founder, watching participants help each other untangle yarn mishaps. โIt is seeing people who barely knew each other this morning becoming teammates, cheering for each otherโs small wins.โ
By weekโs end, every participant had mastered both the slip knot and chain stitch, skills that seem modest but represent the first tangible steps toward potential economic empowerment. Those who successfully complete the four-week program will be eligible to join Crafty Tefy Crochetโs Partner Artisan Team Hope, where their newfound skill set could generate monthly incomes.
For the participants, still carefully practicing their chain stitches at home each evening, these basic techniques represent more than craft skills. They are threads of hope being woven into possibilities for a more secure future. ๐
