is a non-profit organization. Its purpose is to foster, maintain and support a mutually beneficial relationship between alumni and the Academy. Our association sprung to life in August 1969. The founding group foresaw the need to consolidate efforts and work towards a common goal of brotherhood among its members and to uplift of standards of the marine profession by active involvement in shaping up of government policies affecting the maritime industry.

In celebration of Araw ng Kagitingan, the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy (PMMA) honored outstanding cadets during the Awarding and Pinning Ceremony held as part of the Academy’s celebration of its 206th Founding Anniversary today, April 9.

Philippine Merchant Marine Academy Alumni Association Inc. President Engineer Vera Christine Navarrete-Dadula, MMET, served as the Guest of Honor and Speaker for the ceremony.

𝐓𝐎𝐃𝐀𝐘 𝐈𝐍 𝐇𝐈𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐘 | On April 5, 1820, the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy (PMMA), originally called Escuela Náutica de Manila, was inaugurated in Intramuros, Manila. Established to train future merchant marine officers, its first classes were held in a building along Calle Cabildo within the Walled City. Though the original structure was destroyed by the devastating earthquake of 1863, the institution endured and continues to stand as the nation’s premier maritime academy.

In this moment, the PMMAAAI mourns the passing of Chief Engr. Jherdel Alimios from PMMA Class of 2013.

His name will be remembered not only by his friends and family, but also by the many people he met throughout his life in the Academy and the maritime industry. As moving forward is never easy, we extend our heartfelt wishes and strength to his loved ones who have lost a great man.

With deepest respect, the PMMAAAI offers its condolences to his family during this difficult time.

Rest in peace bunkmate.

Introducing our third feature — Engr. Vera Christine Cadiz Navarrete-Dadula, Head of Department-Engine Training at the United Marine Training Center, Inc. and the first woman ever elected President of the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy Alumni Association.

A proud alumna of the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy Class of 2000 who completed Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering, Engr. Navarrete-Dadula has built a distinguished career at the intersection of technical mastery and transformative education.

Her election as the first female president of the PMMA Alumni Association marks a defining moment not just for the organization but for every woman who has ever walked the corridors of the Academy and dared to lead.

A proud alumna of the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy Class of 2009 under the Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation program, Capt Boongaling has charted a remarkable course from the bridge of international vessels to the helm of maritime leadership ashore.
