Manila, Philippines โ€” A Stakeholders Consultation was held on May 25, 2026 at the Manila Metropolitan Theater Grand Ballroom to advance discussions on the petition to declare the Pasig River as a National Cultural Treasure (NCT), following earlier NCCA-led consultations and FGDs.

Organized by ICOMOS Philippines and the Heritage Conservation Society, the event gathered heritage advocates, government representatives, academe, private sector, and civil society to strengthen the riverโ€™s recognition as a vital cultural landscape.

Key discussions highlighted the Pasig Riverโ€™s historical, cultural, ecological, and urban significanceโ€”emphasizing its role in shaping Manilaโ€™s development, identity, and connectivity. Stakeholders underscored the need for river rehabilitation alongside heritage recognition, including improved sanitation, biodiversity restoration, flood mitigation, and sustainable water transport systems.

Participants also raised concerns on large-scale infrastructure projects, urging careful evaluation of ecological and heritage impacts. Governance challenges, policy coordination, and adaptive heritage planning approaches were likewise discussed.

The consultation reaffirmed strong multi-sectoral support for protecting and recognizing the Pasig River as a living heritage corridor central to Philippine history and identity.

The Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Santo Niรฑo de Cebu Devotion (ICHSN) project team interviewed the 2026 Hermano and Hermana Mayores last March 7, 2026.

Engr. Edgar Mary Sarmiento and Jennifer Helen Weigel Sarmiento serve as Hermanos, continuing the Sarmiento familyโ€™s devotion to the Seรฑor Santo Niรฑo. The tradition is also shared by the Weigel family, whose parents served as Hermano and Hermana in 1998. Their devotion to the Santo Niรฑo is nurtured through regular participation in the rituals and feasts of devotion at the Basilica Minore del Santo Niรฑo de Cebu that are passed on within their family and entire household, believing that heritage begins in families for traditions to be passed on across generations

The family expressed their strong support for the project intent in gathering good safeguarding practices surrounding the feasts of devotion.

The ICHSN Project is under the Kabilin Partnership Program of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) Philippines and the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc

The Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Santo Niรฑo de Cebu Devotion (ICHSN) Project team interviewed the 2023 Hermano and Hermana Mayores last February 25, 2026, at their office in Cebu City.

Engr. Venerando and Dr. Donna Lei shared that their children also promote the Sto. Niรฑo devotion among their international peers, while the family actively fosters a culture of prayer at home and serves through medical missions.

The family, together with their organization's volunteers, also expressed their full support for the project in gathering good safeguarding practices surrounding the feasts of devotion.

The ICHSN Project is under the Kabilin Partnership Program of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) Philippines and the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc.
