Safe housing is more than a roof. It’s the foundation of dignity, privacy, and opportunity.

Habitat’s Terwilliger Center for Innovation in Shelter new report, Room to Rise: A gender lens assessment of small-ticket housing finance in India and Nepal, shows that when women in low-income communities access housing finance—supported by inclusive practices and respectful engagement—their living environments become an engine for stronger families and more resilient communities.

Our findings reveal powerful results:
✔️ 67% of women reported improved privacy
✔️ Nearly 80% experienced greater safety
✔️ 91% saw better housing conditions overall

With inclusive housing finance, women lead decisions, gain confidence, and build stronger households. Safe homes create empowered communities.

Last Saturday, 香港仁人家園 Habitat for Humanity Hong Kong launched ✨Women Build 2026✨ with a heartfelt kick‑off, welcoming over 40 participants from corporations, home partners, volunteers and NGO social workers.

Participants got the chance to get together and truly learn from one another in rotating discussion groups that allowed all to reflect and connect more deeply. Participants shared powerful stories: why our partners support Women Build, how volunteers make a difference, the critical role social workers play, and most importantly, the lived experiences of families supported by Habitat.

These open and honest conversations fostered empathy, understanding, and a true sense of community. Women Build is about so much more than construction — it’s about scaling support to women and their families, creating meaningful and lasting impact.

Home is the foundation on which we build our lives. But today, here are the facts:
💠Over 1.6 billion people in Asia-Pacific live in inadequate housing.
💠More than 600 million people in Asia-Pacific live in slums or informal settlements.
💠Seven of the top 20 nations most vulnerable to extreme weather impacts are Asia-Pacific countries

A housing crisis this big need all of us. As Habitat for Humanity crossed into our next 50 years, together, let’s to a world where everyone has a safe, affordable place to call home.

Asia-Pacific cities attract millions of people annually, potentially powering the engine of sustained, inclusive economic development across the region. A new The Economist article warns: "The greatest challenge is a shortage of decent and affordable housing. Fixing that would improve millions of lives. It would also boost economies by making city dwellers more productive."

Our research at Habitat has shown that widescale improvements on housing in informal settlements can help increase life expectancy by 4% and school attendance by 28%, as well as boost GDP of up to 10.5%. The benefits are undeniable. We are ready to stand together with partners -- governments, civil society actors, and donors -- to address the housing crisis and unlock the power of Asia-Pacific's rapid urbanization.

Liz Satow, our area vice-president, and Mia Marina, our senior director for programs, joined leaders from Habitat for Humanity Cambodia and Cambodia's Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction at the forum on “Strengthening Strategic Partnerships to Develop Happiness Homes, Prosperous Villages, and Township for Cambodian Citizens”. They also witnessed the signing of an agreement to collaborate on mobilizing financial, technical and material resources to support 15,000 households--about 64,500 people--in accessing adequate housing.

These continues the work that Habitat Cambodia, MLMUPC, and UN-Habitat have done in establishing the NGO Housing Network, bringing together 15 NGOs to coordinate efforts, share knowledge, and jointly advocate for improved affordable housing policies and practices in Cambodia.

Climate change is accelerating housing risks across Asia-Pacific cities, from flooding and heatwaves to displacement and deepening inequality.

In this blog, Enid Madarcos, our associate director for Urban, Land and Policy, and Sanjeevani Singh, United Nations ESCAP economic affairs officer, assert that climate-resilient housing must be at the heart of urban development, urging cities, communities and other stakeholders to act to protect the most vulnerable.

At Habitat for Humanity, we believe safe, resilient housing is foundational to climate adaptation. Read the full piece: https://www.unescap.org/blog/housing-climate-resilience-asia-pacific-cities
