Project Help 2 Others, or Project H2O is a relief-based program under the disaster response arm of the Mu Sigma Phi Fraternity of the UP College of Medicine, promoting immediate access to safe drinking water during calamities where water is scarce. In the past, the Mu Sigma Phi has provided comprehensive,valuable aid such as relief goods, medicine and medical assistance to Filipinos struck by tragedies. Project H2O is dedicated to providing potable water to those people struck by calamities using the Sawyer filtration system. [𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗛𝟮𝗢 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻]

On October 15, 2013, a 7.2 earthquake struck Bohol, claiming nearly 200 lives, destroying approximately 73, 000 structures, and crippling access to safe drinking water throughout the province. From this tragedy emerged 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗛𝟮𝗢: 𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝟮 𝗢𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀, a relief-based service initiative of the Mu Sigma Phi Fraternity established to provide sustainable access to safe drinking water in disaster-affected communities through portable bucket filtration systems.

13 years later, Project H2O continues to champion the virtues of sustainability, innovation, and accessibility under the guidance of one of its founding members and designers of the membrane filter unit, 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝗱 𝗥𝗮𝗳𝗮𝗲𝗹 𝗙𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗲 "𝗣𝗶𝗽𝗼" 𝗖. 𝗕𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗰, 𝗠𝗗, 𝗙𝗣𝗢𝗔, 𝗠ΣΦ 𝟭𝟵𝟴𝟲.

On June 8, 2026, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Mindanao, leaving many communities without access to safe drinking water. The earthquake turned deep well water sources in the affected areas murky and unsafe, resulting in cases of acute gastroenteritis (AGE), particularly among children.

In response, Project H2O, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Dadiangas, deployed water filtration units to Barangay San Jose, General Santos City, and Glan, Sarangani Province to help restore access to clean and safe drinking water. This relief effort was made possible through the coordination and support of Brods Cesar Anthony Yabut, MΣΦ 1985, Kazan Benigno S. Baluyot, MΣΦ 2001, and Daniel I. Tan, MΣΦ 2019.

On May 2, 2026, Project H2O visited Barangay Nabuclod in Floridablanca, Pampanga, a community lacking water treatment facilities and relying on rainwater catch systems and natural freshwater sources like river basins and springs as their main sources of drinking water.

The program started with an interactive discussion with the community on Water, Sanitation and Health, followed by a public health lecture on acute infectious diarrhea highlighting early symptom recognition, dehydration warning signs, prevention, and proper health-seeking behavior. Demonstration and return demonstration sessions on bucket assembly, maintenance, and troubleshooting were completed with active participation from residents and barangay health workers. The program concluded with a community discussion on the distribution and subsequent turnover of the 33 water filtration units across the barangay.

In the wake of Tropical Storm Basyang, the entire province of Surigao del Sur was placed under a state of calamity last February, leaving many communities struggling with disrupted access to basic necessities, including safe and potable water.

Last March 20, relief efforts reached affected families in Lanuza, particularly in Brgy. Nurcia Proper, Purok Catupgas, and Purok Cabanahan. A total of 150 households benefited from this effort, highlighting both the scale of the need and the importance of coordinated community response.

In times like these, access to clean and safe drinking water remains one of the most urgent and persistent challenges. Through Project H2O, we continue to work toward empowering vulnerable communities with sustainable solutions—ensuring they are not only aided in times of crisis, but equipped with the means to secure safe water for the long term.
