September 21 is a day of remembrance.

Fifty-four years have passed since the declaration of Martial Law. Yet the violence of that period remains present in the stories of those who survived, in the lives of those who were lost, and in the continuing struggle to defend truth, freedom, and human dignity.

Memory carries a political weight. What a society remembers, what it chooses to forget, and whose stories it allows to be heard are questions of power. This is why remembering Martial Law is an act of resistance against historical distortion and deliberate forgetting.

Freedom calls for constant reflection on the conditions in which people live and act. As moral and thinking beings, we have the capacity to examine how our choices are shaped by the laws, institutions, and political structures around us. Our freedom exists within a society, and the way that society is organized determines how that freedom is experienced.

Laws shape our common life. They can protect rights, establish order, and uphold human dignity. They can also be used to legitimize the concentration and abuse of power. The history of Martial Law brings these questions into sharper focus. It reminds us of what happens when political power escapes accountability and when institutions fail to protect the dignity and rights of the people. The experiences of those who lived through that period remain essential to understanding the consequences of authoritarian rule.

We remember those who were imprisoned, tortured, disappeared, and killed. We remember the students, workers, farmers, journalists, activists, and ordinary Filipinos who resisted repression. Their stories remain part of our collective memory and continue to shape the society we are responsible for building.

To remember is to remain vigilant. To question is to exercise our responsibility as citizens. And to defend freedom is to recognize the conditions that allow it to endure.

On this 54th anniversary of Martial Law, we remember the past, examine the present, and continue to uphold truth, freedom, justice, and human dignity.

Humaharap ang PUP System sa naiulat na โ‚ฑ291.83 milyong budget cut, sa kabila ng tinatayang 100,000 mag-aaral sa buong sistema. Sa ganitong kalagayan, nananatiling mahalagang usapin kung sapat ba ang pondong inilalaan para sa pangangailangan ng mga estudyante at sa pagpapaunlad ng pampublikong edukasyon.

Bilang mga Artista ng Bayan, patuloy ding nararanasan ng mga mag-aaral ang kakulangan ng sapat na espasyo at suporta para sa malayang pagpapahayag, sining, at pagtatanghal. Ang sining ay hindi lamang bahagi ng buhay-pamantasanโ€”isa rin itong paraan ng pagtalakay at pag-unawa sa kalagayan ng lipunan.

Higit pa rito, umaabot ang mga usapin sa labas ng pamantasan. Ang mga naiulat na ugnayan ng pamahalaan sa Pax Silica ay nagbubukas ng mga tanong at pangamba mula sa mga komunidad sa Tarlac, partikular hinggil sa lupa, kabuhayan, at karapatan ng mga residenteng maaapektuhan ng mga development na ito.

Kasabay nito, nananatiling usapin para sa mga estudyante ang ugnayan ng administrasyon ng PUP sa NTF-ELCAC, lalo na sa konteksto ng mga pangamba tungkol sa kalayaan sa pagpapahayag, karapatan ng mga student leader, at kalagayan ng mga aktibista at organisasyon sa loob ng pamantasan.
