Last Saturday, the Ticket to Life Manila Scout Troop held a meaningful discussion on Gender and Development (GAD) in celebration of National Women’s Month led by our Troop Leader and GAD Focal Person of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines, Tatay Derek Bonifacio. When we think of gender equality, we often picture international organizations, legislation, or women in high leadership positions. While these are essential, we must also recognize that the advocacy should not be caged in conference rooms, policies, or formal institutions. Advocacy must reach the grassroots—it must be understood, lived, and championed in everyday communities. That is why discussions like this matter. By engaging young Scouts—even those in communities like Malate—we begin to plant the seeds of change early.

We help young people understand that gender sensitivity through the constant practice of respect, equality, equity, and dignity can break traditional gender biases and stereotypes. These biases often lead to discrimination, abuse, exploitation, bullying, and gender-related violence. Promoting gender sensitivity empowers individuals of all genders to reach their full potential and supports their personal growth and development.

In the previous academic year in the Philippines, the Department of Education recorded 2,500 cases of bullying—an increase from the previous year’s 2,268 cases. In relation to this, DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara emphasized that addressing this issue requires a whole-of-society approach.

True to the values of Scouting, the Ticket to Life Manila Scout Troop conducted a session on bullying, its effects, and how to properly respond to it. Through the session led by our very own Social Worker, Sctr. Reygie C. Cruz, Scouts were guided in understanding the different forms of bullying, its impact on individuals and communities, and the importance of speaking up and supporting one another.

The discussion created a safe space for Scouts to share their experiences and reflect on how they can contribute to a more respectful and inclusive environment. Emphasis was placed on empathy, awareness, and the responsibility of every Scout to stand against bullying in all its forms.

Activities like these continue to reinforce the role of Scouting in shaping not only capable individuals, but also compassionate members of society who look out for one another.

Learning Fire Safety and Strengthening Brotherhood

Last March 7, 2026, on the first Saturday of the month, the Ticket to Life Manila Scouts participated in a meaningful activity in observance of National Fire Prevention Month in the Philippines. As part of this initiative, the Scouts visited the Paco Fire Sub-Station to learn about fire prevention, proper response during emergencies, and the responsibilities carried by firefighters in protecting communities.

The session was led by FINSP Annabelle C. Padilla, Commander of the Paco Fire Sub-Station of the Bureau of Fire Protection – National Capital Region. The Scouts were given valuable insights into fire safety, emergency preparedness, and the daily realities of serving as a firefighter. We extend our sincere gratitude to the Bureau of Fire Protection, the Paco Fire Sub-Station, and FINSP Annabelle C. Padilla for warmly accommodating our Scouts and sharing their knowledge and experience.

The day was made even more special with the visit of a brother from the Korea Scout Association, Scout Leader Lee Seung Jun, Vice Chairperson of the Association of Top Achiever Scouts of Korea (ATAS) and the Tiger Scouts Association of Korea (TSAK). His presence strengthened the spirit of international Scouting friendship and reminded our Scouts that the brotherhood of Scouting extends far beyond borders.

To conclude the day, the troop gathered to celebrate Holy Mass, in keeping with our religious commitment observed every first Saturday of the month.

Reflecting on Growth and Scout Ideals

Last week, the Ticket to Life Manila Scout Troop conducted a Board of Review and Scout Ideals activity as part of our continuing program for Scout development. The session provided Scouts the opportunity to reflect on their progress, share their experiences, and demonstrate their understanding of the values and principles of Scouting.

Through meaningful conversations, Scouts revisited the Scout Oath and Law, strengthening their commitment to live out these ideals in their daily lives. The activity served as both an evaluation and a moment of reflection, encouraging personal growth, responsibility, and continued dedication to the Scouting journey.

The Ticket to Life Rovers and Leaders who were part of last year’s Norway trip recently received a pleasant surprise from Sir Lars Atle. Each of them was given a handwritten letter, attached with their individual photos, sent all the way from Norway.

For most of the Rovers, it was their first time receiving a handwritten letter delivered through the post, making the experience even more special and memorable. In a time where messages are often sent instantly online, the effort and thought behind each letter served as a meaningful reminder of the connections formed during their journey.

The letters brought back memories of the trip and reaffirmed the lasting bonds built through Scouting. Laughs and heartfelt moments were shared as the Scouts each read their letters.

To Sir Lars and the rest of our brothers and sisters in 1.Sandnes speidergruppe, thank you for your kindness, thoughtfulness, and continued love. Your support reminds us that Scouting truly connects people across cultures and countries. Not a day last that we don't remember you and we will always keep you in our minds and in our hearts.

It was a great day of learning how to live by our Scout Slogan: “Do a Good Turn Daily.” We discussed how being helpful is not just a rule to follow, but a way of making someone else’s day a little brighter without expecting anything in return. It was truly heartwarming to hear the Scouts share their own stories of simple acts of kindness they have done around Malate.

The activity served as a reminder that being a Scout means always looking for opportunities to be kind and helpful every single day, no matter where we are.

The Annual Council Meeting of BSP - Manila Council concluded last week, and we are proud to share that the Ticket to Life Manila Scout Troop brought home three awards recognizing the perseverance and dedication of our Scouts and Leaders.

Rover Circle 45 and the John Bosco Scout Troop were both awarded Best in Membership by the Council. In addition, the Troop received a special recognition for Best in Activities, in appreciation of our active participation in the programs and initiatives of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines.

These awards are a reflection of the consistent effort, commitment, and teamwork within our troop. We share this recognition with our Scouts, Leaders, partners, and supporters who continue to believe in our mission and stand with us in every endeavor.

Maraming salamat po for your trust and continued support. Together, we move forward, committed to serving and growing even stronger in the year ahead.

Honoring the Legacy of the First Scoutmaster

Last Saturday’s lecture on Lord Baden-Powell was a meaningful revisit to the foundations of Scouting. From the early camp at Brownsea Island to the worldwide movement sparked by Scouting for Boys, the session reminded us how Baden-Powell’s principles of leadership, service, and outdoor skills continue to shape young people even today.

It was an opportunity to reconnect with the roots of our brotherhood and reflect on the values that guide us as Scouts. Our thanks to Scout Leader Jomar for leading the discussion and sharing insights that keep the spirit of Scouting alive in every generation.

The day was made even more special as we welcomed our siblings from Ticket to Life Project Ulap. Their presence added warmth and strengthened the bond within our growing Scouting family.

To cap off the Saturday, the Scouts also celebrated the birthday of our very handsome Scout Leader (according to him), Sir Derek. It was a simple but joyful moment that reminded us that beyond activities and lectures, Scouting is also about fellowship and shared memories.
