At the 2024 Frankfurt Book Fair, โ€˜Some People Need Killingโ€™ author Patricia Evangelista () joined Italian novelist and screenwriter Francesca Melandri in conversation with poet and creative writing professor Dinah Roma. Their discussion examined the crosslines between fact and fiction, journalism and literature, and many more.

Evangelista does not claim her book changed the world. โ€œThe only way to survive as a journalist is to have no expectations,โ€ she said. โ€œBecause if I believe that what I do will bring someone justice or policy change, I would stop being a journalist next week.โ€ Instead, she believes in one thing: keeping a record. โ€œThe record exists. Itโ€™s there. I hope to have honoured the people who told me their stories.โ€

What she can say is that it mattered to the people who saw their fathersโ€™ names, their cousinsโ€™ names. โ€œSome of them have written back and said, โ€˜I never told my story before.โ€™โ€ Others, ashamed of how their dead would be remembered, found in her work a voice they had long been denied.

At her book tour in Manila, families of the dead asked her to sign copies not for themselves, but for those they had lost. โ€œThey might be dead, but they could still speak.โ€
