❤️ BUY SOMETHING, HELP NANAY CAROL

Instead of asking everyone to donate, I thought of another way we can help my mother-in-law, Nanay Carol.

What if you simply buy something from us?

Over the next few days, I’m going to post some of the things that we have available for sale—clothes, shoes, items from our thrift collection, and other things we can let go of.

If you see something you like, buy it from us.

Every peso we can raise from these sales will help us pay for Nanay Carol’s CT scan, blood tests, laboratory expenses, and other medical needs.

We’re doing this because we don’t want to wait.

She needs medical attention now, and we’re trying to find every possible way to raise the money as quickly as we can.

So instead of simply giving us money, you can get something you actually want while helping someone who desperately needs it.

It’s a simple exchange:

❤️ LET’S MAKE A DEAL.

I’m reposting this because my mother-in-law, Nanay Carol, still needs our help. I need ti gather 250k to help her with all medical assistance.

She needs a CT scan, blood tests, and further medical treatment—and depending on what the doctors find, she may need an operation.

She’s 75 years old.

And all I want is for my little daughter and her two cousins to have more years with their grandmother.

So today, I’m going to ask for help in a slightly different way.

If I have to work for it, I’ll work for it.

Give me $50.

Whatever you can afford.

And let’s make a deal. 😄

If our paths cross when I’m in Europe or America, I’ll work for you, 2-3-4 hours, i will do this for my Mother in law.

I’ll help clean.

I’ll garden.

I’ll help you with whatever honest work I can do.

I might even let you boss me around for a day. 😂

Because right now, I’m not asking for myself.

I’m asking as a son-in-law who wants to give his mother-in-law a chance to see her grandchildren grow up.

For almost 20 years, Nanay Carol has quietly helped me and True Manila care for other people.

She cooked for our community.
She fed hungry children.

❤️ HELP US GIVE NANAY CAROL A CHANCE

For almost 20 years, there has been a woman quietly helping me behind the scenes of True Manila.

Her name is Carolina Ramos, but we call her Nanay Carol.

She is 75 years old.

She is a widow.

And she has spent so much of her life taking care of other people.

When friends from different countries came to San Andres Bukid to help our community, Nanay Carol was always there.

She welcomed them.

She cooked for them.

She taught us how to prepare Filipino food.

Whenever we had feeding programs or outreach missions—including bringing food to communities affected by floods and storms in different parts of the Philippines—Nanay Carol helped us prepare and serve the food.

But one of the things I will always remember most about her is how she cared for hungry children.

Her small carinderia is located near two public schools. She would sometimes start cooking as early as 3:00 in the morning, and by around 5:00 AM, children would already be passing by on their way to school.

I would tell the children:

“If you’re hungry, go to Nanay Carol. Tell her True Manila sent you.”

They could come before school, after school, or whenever they were hungry.

Nanay Carol would give them food and write down what she had given them so I could reimburse her later.

Sometimes, she would even tell me:

“It’s okay. Don’t pay me.”

That was the kind of person she was.

But now, things have changed.

In 2023, her eldest daughter, who had suffered from epilepsy since she was six years old, had a seizure while walking in the street. She fell and suffered a stroke.

Because of delays in receiving the medical attention she needed, her condition became critical. After several days of fighting, she passed away.

Losing her daughter deeply affected Nanay Carol.

Not long after, Nanay Carol suffered another stroke herself.

Over the years, she has suffered multiple strokes, and in 2025, her latest stroke left half of her body paralyzed.

Still, we continued to support her and hoped she would recover.

But more health problems began, made even more difficult by our struggle to consistently provide the medicines and medical care she needed.

We tried to find doctors, medicines, laboratory tests, and financial assistance. We also reached out to different government agencies, hoping they could help.

But getting assistance has been extremely difficult. For almost four months, we have been going back and forth, being asked to return again and again, while Nanay Carol’s condition continues to get worse.

For months, our family struggled to provide everything she needed.

Then, last month, doctors discovered tumors in her liver and pancreas.

Now, at 75 years old, Nanay Carol is facing one of the biggest battles of her life.

And this is why I am asking for help.

I know we cannot promise how many years someone has left.

But I don’t want to reach a point where I look back and ask myself:

“Could I have done more?”

I want to give Nanay Carol a chance.

A chance to receive the medical care she urgently needs.

A chance to feel better.

A chance to spend more time with her family.

Maybe we will be blessed with many more years with her.

We simply don’t know.

Her doctors have told us that she needs a CT scan and additional laboratory tests to better understand her condition and determine what treatment is possible. Depending on the results, she may also need a procedure or surgery.

We don’t know yet what the future holds.

But while there is still something we can do, I don’t want to give up on her.

The people in our community know Nanay Carol. They love her.

But many of them are also struggling financially. They would like to help, but they simply don’t have the means to provide the continuous support that her condition requires.

That’s why I am asking our friends, the people who have met her, the people who have seen her in our videos, and anyone who believes that kindness can come back around:

More Than Education. A Friendship That Grows.

Education has always been one of the most important parts of True Manila.

We started in 2010 by giving school bags and school supplies to children in our community. Over the years, whenever friends from different countries visited us, we would go to Divisoria, buy as many school supplies as we could, and bring them to children who needed them.

But after more than 15 years, we learned that education is not only about giving school supplies.

It is about understanding the child behind the school bag.

When a traveler comes to True Manila and wants to help, we don't simply ask them to donate money.

We invite them into the community.

We introduce them to families.

Sometimes, we bring them inside three different homes so they can meet the parents and children, hear their stories, and understand what they are going through.

Why are they struggling?

What does the family really need?

What does the student need to stay in school?

And what kind of help could actually change something in their life?

Then we let our friends decide for themselves.

Maybe they choose to sponsor a student.

Maybe they help with school supplies, transportation, food, school allowances, or a laptop.

Maybe they can only give a little.

And that's okay.

The amount is not the most important thing.

What matters is whether the help can create an opportunity.

Because our goal is not to keep a child dependent on donations.

Our hope is that these students can finish their education, discover their abilities, build a better life, and eventually leave the circumstances they were born into.

And one day, perhaps they will become the person helping someone else.

That's why we also try to teach them something beyond education:

You don't have to be rich to help another person.

You can help with your time.

Your knowledge.

Your skills.

Your friendship.

Or simply by giving someone an opportunity.

And we have one small tradition that has become very meaningful to us.

Whenever we connect a student with a traveler or sponsor, we give the student a plant.

The plant represents the friendship between two people who may have never met before.

One person grew up here in the Philippines.

The other traveled thousands of kilometers to this country, sometimes without much money themselves, simply hoping to find someone they could help.

The student takes care of the plant.

They watch it grow.

And we hope that every time they see it, they remember the person who came into their life and believed in them.

Because the plant needs care to stay alive.

So does a friendship.

And just like the plant, we hope the student grows stronger, reaches for the sunlight, and eventually becomes something bigger than the circumstances around them.

Maybe years from now, that same student will have a family, a career, and a life they once thought was impossible.

And maybe they will look at that plant and remember:

"Someone I didn't know once came all the way to the Philippines and believed that I was worth helping."

That's what we are trying to build at True Manila.

Not just donations.

Not charity for the sake of charity.

Connection. Education. Friendship. Opportunity.

We want our travelers to know the people they are helping.

We want our students to know the people who believed in them.

And we want both sides to understand that helping another person can become a lifelong relationship.

Because sometimes, the greatest thing you can give someone isn't money.

It's the belief that their life can grow.

And just like a small plant, that belief needs to be cared for.
