Three years after the devastating oil spill in the Verde Island Passage, fishing communities continue to bear the cost of environmental failure. The seas that once sustained them have not fully recovered. Livelihoods remain fragile. Accountability remains uncertain.

FORUM ON ENVIRONMENTAL INJUSTICE IN CAMDEN, Sacred heart Parish, Camden, New Jersey

The theme of this forum, "Environmental Injustice: A Sin Against the People," is most appropriate. The environmental degradation that harms our communities, whether in Camden or the Philippines, is a grave injustice. Pope Francis, in Laudato Si’, has made it clear that human beings commit sin when they damage the earth’s waters, land, and air. This sin is not abstract; it is concretely experienced in the daily suffering of the poor, whose lives are irreversibly damaged by environmental harm - Laudato Si, no. 8

📚 𝗙𝗥𝗘𝗘 𝗥𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧𝗦 𝗢𝗙 𝗡𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗘 𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗢𝗨𝗥𝗖𝗘 𝗔𝗟𝗘𝗥𝗧: Eco-Theological Framework of the Rights of Nature By Fr. Edwin A. Gariguez

This reflection offers an examination of Christianity’s historical anthropocentric theology vis-à-vis the paradigm shift to evolving eco-spirituality championed by Thomas Berry that calls for a new cosmology, emphasizing the need for humans to recognize their place within a larger ecological framework, while embracing a holistic, interconnected relationship with the natural world. More importantly, it explores the ecological conversion perspective both of Pope Francis's Laudato Si as aligned with the Rights of Nature.

Learn more about the transformative eco-theological framework of the Rights of Nature as we continue to advocate and promote the intrinsic value of all creatures, which underscores their interconnectedness, challenging the utilitarian view of nature.

The toxic pollution from industries, whether from waste disposal, or energy production, or mining, has dire consequences. Both Camden and the Philippines are at risk, but it is the poorest, most marginalized communities that suffer the most. In Camden, people of color, particularly Black and Latino communities, face higher rates of asthma, cancer, and other health issues as a result of this environmental degradation. Similarly, in the Philippines, indigenous peoples, farmers, and fisherfolk are the ones being impacted by deforestation, resource extraction resulting to industrial and water pollution.

Whenever a human-induced ecological disaster occurs, I am reminded of Fr. Seán McDonagh, SSC, who prophetically observed in 1990:

The social justice agenda has so "occupied the minds of ‘church activists’ to such an extent that they often downplayed or dismissed action to preserve the environment," operating under the belief that human structures must be renewed before environmental concerns can be addressed.

This serves as a sharp critique of modern anthropocentrism, an ideology that permeates both government programs and church ministries. Overcoming this human-centeredness is essential to our ecological conversion.

Celebrate—without harming the environment.

During fiestas, parish events, graduations, birthdays, community programs, and many other gatherings, we decorate our surroundings with plastic tarpaulins and banderitas. They make our places bright, festive, and attractive. They add color and life to the occasion.

But after the celebration… what happens?
These decorations become waste.
Torn tarps are thrown into dumpsites. Plastic banderitas are discarded. These materials do not easily decompose. They end up clogging canals, polluting rivers, and adding to the growing problem of plastic waste in our communities.

What was meant to beautify a celebration quietly harms the environment long after the event is over.

This is a gentle moment for us to ask ourselves: Can we celebrate without harming creation?

We can choose better and more responsible alternatives:
• reusable cloth banners instead of plastic tarps,
• fabric or paper decorations instead of plastic banderitas,
• simpler, more meaningful décor rather than materials that will immediately be thrown away.

Celebrations are meant to bring joy — not garbage.
As a community that loves God and cares for His creation, we are invited to show that even in the way we celebrate, we practice stewardship.

Let our festivities be not only colorful, but also environmentally responsible.

Because caring for creation is not always about big projects.
Sometimes, it begins with small, loving decisions — like choosing not to hang another plastic tarp.

The world has entered an era of global "water bankruptcy," as irreversible damage experienced by water systems has pushed many basins around the world beyond recovery, recent research has shown.

Some of the worst impacts include chronic groundwater depletion, overallocation of water, deforestation, pollution and degradation to land and soil, according to a report released Tuesday by the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH).

As a result, many regions around the world are experiencing a "post-crisis condition," which entails irreversible losses of natural water capital and an inability to bounce back to historic baselines, the researchers said.
