# WHEN YOUR CHARACTER IS PUT ON TRIAL
Sometimes, Brethren, the hardest lessons in life are not learned from enemies.
They're learned from people we once trusted.
There are moments when someone cannot face the consequences of their own actions, so instead they create a different story. Not because it is true, but because it is easier than admitting where they fell short.
Rather than examine their own conduct, they question yours.
Rather than acknowledge the wound they caused, they attempt to make you the cause of it.
But every Mason should remember something important:
A man's character is not determined by what is said about him.
It is determined by how he conducts himself when those words are spoken.
The working tools teach us that rough stones are shaped through pressure, friction, and labor. The same is true of men. Adversity reveals what was already within us.
When falsehoods are spoken, there is a temptation to answer every accusation, challenge every rumor, and fight every battle.
Yet wisdom teaches restraint.
Not every criticism deserves a reply.
Not every misunderstanding requires correction.
Not every shadow cast upon your reputation deserves your energy.
The Square teaches us to act honestly.
The Compasses teach us to govern our passions.
And the Level reminds us that, in time, all men stand upon equal ground before Truth.
Truth requires no embellishment.
It requires no performance.
It requires no defense beyond a life lived consistently with integrity.
A lie must be constantly maintained.
Truth simply stands.
The Mason who knows his own heart does not spend his days chasing every whisper. He remains steadfast in his obligations, faithful to his principles, and committed to upright conduct.
Because eventually, time does what arguments cannot.
Time reveals character.
Time exposes motives.
Time separates fact from fiction.
As builders of the Inner Temple, our responsibility is not to control what others say about us.
Our responsibility is to ensure that our actions leave no doubt about who we are.

Continue your work.
Keep your word.
Practice Brotherly Love.
Relief.
Truth.
Let your conduct speak louder than their accusations.
For the sun never argues with the clouds that temporarily obscure it.
It simply continues to shine until the clouds pass.
