𝐄𝐒𝐂𝐎-𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐞: 𝐕𝐨𝐥. 𝟐, 𝐈𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐞 𝟒 | 𝐒𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐨𝐠𝐨𝐧 🌿

This issue of 𝘌𝘚𝘊𝘖-𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘦 highlights Philippine native trees in full bloom this summer, the 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗼𝗴𝗼𝗻.

The 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗼𝗴𝗼𝗻 (𝘊𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘹𝘺𝘭𝘶𝘮 𝘴𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘶𝘮) is a tropical tree commonly found in lowland forests across Southeast Asia, including the Philippines. Often 𝗱𝘂𝗯𝗯𝗲𝗱 “𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗿𝘆 𝗕𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗺,” it thrives in open and secondary forests and is among the species that naturally regenerate after environmental disturbances. As a 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗱𝘂𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲, it sheds its leaves seasonally and can grow up to 𝟰𝟱 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗹.

At the same time, Salingogon is a versatile tree. It is widely used as an 𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁 due to its vibrant pink, 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗿𝘆 𝗯𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗺-𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝘀. Its 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗱𝘆 𝘄𝗼𝗼𝗱 is valued for carving, furniture, and house construction.

Additionally, the plant is used in 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝘀 in Laos and Vietnam, it serves as an ingredient in a herbal drink called bitter nail tea in China, and its leaves are consumed as vegetables in Thai and Lao cuisine.

𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗼𝗴𝗼𝗻 continues to play an important role in culture. 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲 this species can be seen in conservation areas such as the 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗶 𝗚𝗲𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲, helping preserve its presence in the wild while supporting forest restoration.

We’re making waves for these 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗲-𝗹𝘆 amazing creatures that lives beneath the surface and essential to life on Earth. Fishes and crustaceans to marine mammals and aquatic insects, thrive in oceans, rivers, lakes, and wetlands, which plays a vital role in keeping ecosystems balanced. 🌊

𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐀𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐀𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐚𝐲, celebrated every 𝐀𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐥 𝟑, was established in 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟬 by the 𝗔𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗟𝗮𝘄 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗾𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗔𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗟𝗮𝘄 𝗜𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 to raise awareness and encourage protection for the billions of aquatic animals around the world. 💙

Today we celebrate this 𝘁𝗼𝗮𝗱-𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 awesome creatures, which are often overlooked and misunderstood, yet incredibly important creatures that have existed for over 𝟮𝟱𝟲 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 and continue to thrive in ecosystems around the world. These 𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘀 may be small, but they play a massive role in maintaining ecological balance. 🐸

𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐠 𝐃𝐚𝐲, celebrated every 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝟐𝟎, is more than just appreciation, it is also a reminder that many frog species are at 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸 because of pollution, habitat loss, climate change, and disease. It’s easy to forget about them, but their decline says a lot about what’s happening to our environment. Today we celebrate one of the world’s most beloved animals, the 𝗴𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮. Known for their adorable black-and-white fur and gentle nature, pandas have become a 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘆𝗺𝗯𝗼𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Once considered 𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱, their population has slowly improved thanks to strong conservation efforts and habitat protection.

𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚 𝐃𝐚𝐲 reminds us that protecting wildlife and preserving natural habitats are important steps in caring for our planet. Every species plays a role in maintaining the balance of nature, and pandas are a powerful reminder that when people work together, positive change is possible.

Mangroves are among the most important ecosystems in the Philippines. These coastal forests serve as 𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙖𝙡 𝙗𝙖𝙧𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙖𝙜𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙨𝙩 𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙢𝙨, 𝙩𝙮𝙥𝙝𝙤𝙤𝙣𝙨, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙘𝙤𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙡 𝙚𝙧𝙤𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣, protecting communities from the impacts of climate change.

However, a memorandum issued by the 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐬 (𝐃𝐄𝐍𝐑) may allow mangroves to be 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵-𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 to make way for certain infrastructure projects under “exceptional circumstances.”

Studies show that 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀,

🎵“𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐭 𝐩𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐲 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞”🎵

𝗟𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗙𝗲𝗯𝗿𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝟮𝟴, EscoSavers had the privilege of attending a meaningful seminar-workshop about 𝗔𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗢𝗳 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘀 𝗔𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹𝘀 (FOCA UP), an organization from the University of the Philippines Diliman. The event brought together students and advocates who share the same goal of promoting animal welfare and responsible pet ownership, creating a space for learning, reflection, and collaboration. ✨📚

The seminar featured three insightful speakers who shared their expertise on different but equally important topics. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳. 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗿𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘇 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗔𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗲 and emphasized the responsibility of individuals and communities to ensure the safety, protection, and well-being of animals. 𝗠𝘀. 𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗴𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝘁 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗲, teaching us about proper care, understanding feline behavior, and promoting humane treatment of campus cats. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳. 𝗞𝗵𝗿𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗮 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗮𝗿𝗮 𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗸𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻–𝗔𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗕𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗹𝗲 𝗗𝗼𝗴𝘀, highlighting the importance of patience, proper techniques, and mutual trust in building healthy relationships with dogs. 🐾💗

A special highlight of the event was the 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹𝘀. The 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿𝘀 who serve as the handlers of the ESA dogs were also present, guiding them responsibly and demonstrating proper handling in real-life situations. Their dedication showed us that 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲, 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸. Seeing the positive and calming impact of the dogs on participants allowed us to witness firsthand the importance of the human–animal connection. 🐶

Through this experience, we learned that animal welfare goes beyond simply providing food and shelter. It involves awareness, empathy, education, and consistent responsible action. We realized that as students, we have a role in creating a safer and more compassionate campus environment for animals. The seminar strengthened our commitment to advocate for responsible care and kindness within our own community.
