WOMEN'S GROUPS PUSH EXPANDED FOOD SUBSIDIES FOR MOTHERS, PASSAGE OF MAGNA CARTA FOR INFORMAL WORKERS
Women leaders from Akbayan Party, Partido Manggagawa, EveryWoman, MAKALAYA-Homenet, Manila Informal Workers Association (MAIWA) and PINASAMA called for the expansion of food subsidies for working women, particularly mothers, amid the ongoing oil crisis, alongside the urgent passage of the Magna Carta for Workers in the Informal Economy.
The women advocates proposed prioritizing mothers in the P3,000 assistance under the government’s Walang Gutom Program, with benefits redeemable in local palengkes to both support household nutrition and sustain small vendors.“Sa nangyayaring pagtaas ng presyo ngayon, paniguraduhin dapat ng gobyerno na dapat walang magutom na tahanan, at walang maluluging mga manininda,” said Juana Caumeran, Head of Akbayan Women.
Akbayan emphasized that mothers must be placed at the center of subsidy programs, recognizing their role in ensuring food security at home.“Ang mga nanay ang unang nagbabawas ng sariling pagkain para lang may maisubo ang mga anak. Hindi sila dapat pinapipila sa gutom," Caumeran added.
The party also highlighted the compounded burden faced by informal workers, especially women market vendors, who are grappling with rising costs and declining purchasing power. Akbayan renewed its call for the passage of House Bill 8628, or the Magna Carta for Workers in the Informal Economy.“Ang mga tindera, kasama ng marami pang maliliit na vendors, ang bumubuhay sa ating lokal na ekonomiya. Panahon na para bigyan sila ng tamang proteksyon laban sa krisis,” Caumeran stressed.
The “Akbayan Reform Bloc” in Congress comprised of Representatives Chel Diokno, Perci Cendaña, dadah Kiram Ismula and Dinagat Islands Rep.Kaka Bag-ao is set to file on Wednesday a resolution seeking the expansion of food subsidies, ensuring that assistance directly reaches working mothers while reinforcing demand for local market vendors.
The proposed measure integrates the Walang Gutom Program with the Enhanced Partnership Against Hunger and Poverty (EPAHP), creating a closed-loop system from government support to households and back to community vendors. #
