WOMEN'S GROUPS PUSH EXPANDED FOOD SUBSIDIES FOR MOTHERS, PASSAGE OF MAGNA CARTA FOR INFORMAL WORKERS

Women leaders from Akbayan Party, Partido Manggagawa, EveryWoman, MAKALAYA-Homenet, Manila Informal Workers Association (MAIWA) and PINASAMA called for the expansion of food subsidies for working women, particularly mothers, amid the ongoing oil crisis, alongside the urgent passage of the Magna Carta for Workers in the Informal Economy.

The women advocates proposed prioritizing mothers in the P3,000 assistance under the government’s Walang Gutom Program, with benefits redeemable in local palengkes to both support household nutrition and sustain small vendors.“Sa nangyayaring pagtaas ng presyo ngayon, paniguraduhin dapat ng gobyerno na dapat walang magutom na tahanan, at walang maluluging mga manininda,” said Juana Caumeran, Head of Akbayan Women.

Akbayan emphasized that mothers must be placed at the center of subsidy programs, recognizing their role in ensuring food security at home.“Ang mga nanay ang unang nagbabawas ng sariling pagkain para lang may maisubo ang mga anak. Hindi sila dapat pinapipila sa gutom," Caumeran added.

The party also highlighted the compounded burden faced by informal workers, especially women market vendors, who are grappling with rising costs and declining purchasing power. Akbayan renewed its call for the passage of House Bill 8628, or the Magna Carta for Workers in the Informal Economy.“Ang mga tindera, kasama ng marami pang maliliit na vendors, ang bumubuhay sa ating lokal na ekonomiya. Panahon na para bigyan sila ng tamang proteksyon laban sa krisis,” Caumeran stressed.

The “Akbayan Reform Bloc” in Congress comprised of Representatives Chel Diokno, Perci Cendaña, dadah Kiram Ismula and Dinagat Islands Rep.Kaka Bag-ao is set to file on Wednesday a resolution seeking the expansion of food subsidies, ensuring that assistance directly reaches working mothers while reinforcing demand for local market vendors.

The proposed measure integrates the Walang Gutom Program with the Enhanced Partnership Against Hunger and Poverty (EPAHP), creating a closed-loop system from government support to households and back to community vendors. #

International Women’s Day 2026

Today, the National Union of Building and Construction Workers (NUBCW), in partnership with the EEI Unions and the Building and Wood Workers’ International (BWI), proudly celebrated International Women’s Day 2026 with the powerful theme:
"Women in Construction: She Builds, She Leads.”
The meaningful gathering was held at the Occupational Safety and Health Center in Quezon City, bringing together women workers, union leaders, and advocates who continue to break barriers in the construction industry—an industry long dominated by men.
This celebration highlighted the growing leadership and participation of women in building our communities, our workplaces, and our unions. It served as a platform to discuss the barriers women face in construction, and to strengthen our collective commitment to gender equality, safety, and dignity at work.
A special tribute was also given to three remarkable women whose dedication and dream for gender equality in the labor force helped inspire and strengthen women’s organizing in the construction sector:
• Tes Borgonos
• Mye Hega
• Inday Grafane
Their courage, vision, and commitment laid the foundation for empowering women workers and advancing the call for equal opportunities, leadership, and protection in the construction industry. Because of women like them, more women are stepping forward—not only to build structures, but to build movements and lead change.
As we celebrate International Women’s Day, NUBCW reaffirms its commitment to continue organizing, empowering, and uplifting women workers.

✋ BAWAL ANG BASTOS!

Nakiisa ang Akbayan Women sa All Women Congress bilang bahagi ng paggunita sa International Women’s Day. Kasama sina Akbayan Rep. Dadah Kiram Ismula , Dinagat Representative Kaka Bag-ao Akbayan Rep. Perci Vilar Cendana, Rep.

Kababaihan Makapangyarihan: Women Assert Dignity and Power at Kababaihan ng Maynila Women’s Day Gathering

Today, at the Kababaihan ng Maynila Women’s Day activity held at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) Manila, women stood united in a clear and powerful message: Kababaihan makapangyarihan. Bawal ang bastos. Women are not objects.

Carrying purple banners and ribbons bearing the words “Bawal ang Bastos” and “Women are not objects,” participants asserted their collective stand against sexism, harassment, and all forms of violence against women. The action was a visible declaration that women will not be silenced, diminished, or disrespected - in campuses, in communities, or in the halls of power.

The gathering was highlighted by the presence of Senator Risa Hontiveros, a steadfast advocate for women’s rights and gender equality. In her message, she reaffirmed the urgent need to strengthen laws and accountability mechanisms that protect women from abuse, exploitation, and discrimination.

Akbayan Women and allied groups emphasized that Women’s Month is not only a celebration - it is a call to action. Amid persistent misogyny and attempts to normalize degrading language and behavior toward women, today’s show of solidarity sends a strong signal: Filipino women demand respect, justice, and equal power.
We will continue to organize, speak out, and push for policies that uphold women’s dignity and expand their opportunities. Our message is simple and unwavering:
Kababaihan makapangyarihan. Hindi tatahimik laban sa abuso at karahasan. #
