Jelena Anne B. Inovio, the lone Summa Cum Laude of the entire TUP Manila Class of 2025, stood before her fellow graduates, faculty, and family on the last day of the 120th Commencement Exercises to deliver a heartfelt valedictory address.
In her speech, she recalled a phrase that had followed her since childhood: “Galingan mo! Ikaw ang pag-asa ng pamilya mo.” What once felt like a heavy burden became a reminder that her achievements were never for herself alone. Now, as the top-ranked graduate, she dedicated her triumph to her parents, support system, and the Filipino people — whose taxes make public education possible.
Despite not having grand, life-changing moments during her college years, she drew strength from her perseverance — a quiet cycle of reviewing lessons, meeting deadlines, and enduring the long commute from Laguna to Manila — a testament to the power of simply showing up.
Ms. Inovio also acknowledged the deeper truth that not every student enjoys the same privileges and opportunities. “Whatever advantages we’ve had, whether in our education, skills, or influence, they come with a responsibility and accountability to do more than just succeed for ourselves,” she highlighted.
In her final words, Inovio urged her fellow TUPians: “Let our experiences not be burdens but motivations to inspire others to pursue their dreams, and let our privilege be the force that breaks down walls, not the ones that build them higher.”
For TUP Manila’s only Summa Cum Laude this year, success is not a medal worn alone — but a torch passed on to light the way for others.
