Declaration โFIDUCIA SUPPLICANSโ
Issued by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith
Approved by Pope Francis (Please pray for me, I implore, that I may be able to satisfy the clarifications needed].
MY RECOMMENDATIONS BEFORE WE BEGIN:
1. Read the full document. Pray over it. And reflect.
2. Be wary of the social media and other comments, even those coming from theologians who criticize the Holy Father.
3. ASK the question: What is the intention of the Church in the new millennium?
4. ASK the question: What would Jesus do?
5. Pray and love our Pope all the more.
DOCTRINAL DECLARATION OPENS THE POSSIBILITY TO BLESS COUPLES IN IRREGULAR SITUATIONS.
1. The Church does not have the power to impart a liturgical blessing on irregular or same-s*x couples (FIDUCIA SUPPLICANS, paragraphs 12).
2. The doctrine regarding marriage does not change, and the blessing does not signify approval of the union.
3. FIDUCIA SUPPLICANS: โBlessing couples in irregular situations and same-s*x couples without officially validating their status or changing in any way the Churchโs perennial teaching on marriageโ (see paragraphs 1-3).
4. Document reiterated the โCatholic doctrine:โ Only s*xual relations between a man and a woman in the context of marriage are considered lawful.
PASTORAL MEANING OF BLESSINGS
1. The couple is blessed but not the union.
2. When two people request a blessing, even if their situation as a couple is โirregular,โ it will be possible for the ordained minister to consent. (ASK the question: What would Jesus do?)
3. The Church welcomes, through these blessings, even those who do not live according to the norms of Christian moral doctrine but humbly request to be blessed.
4. Those who ask for a blessing show themselves โto be in need of Godโs saving presenceโ in their lives by expressing โa petition for Godโs assistance, a plea to live betterโ (par. 21).
5. This request should be received and valued โoutside of a liturgical frameworkโ (paragraph 23).
6. However, this gesture of pastoral closeness must avoid any elements that remotely resemble a marriage rite (Sacrament of MATRIMONY).
7. Pastoral blessings, distinguishing from liturgical ones, are more akin to signs of popular devotion.
DUTIES OF A PRIEST
1. Priests may bless same-s*x couples but without any type of ritualization or offering the impression of a marriage. THE PRIEST SHOULD MAKE THIS CLEAR BEFORE DOING THE BLESSINGS.
2. Blessings are entrusted to โa practical discernment in particular circumstancesโ (par. 37).
3. PASTORAL blessing โis offered to all without requiring anything,โ helping people feel that they are still blessed despite their mistakes and that โtheir heavenly Father continues to will their good and to hope that they will ultimately open themselves to the goodโ (par. 27).
4. INSIDE OR OUTSIDE THE CHURCH. There are โseveral occasions when people spontaneously ask for a blessing, whether on pilgrimages, at shrines, or even on the street when they meet a priest and these blessings โare meant for everyone; no one is to be excluded from themโ (par. 28).
5. PRAYER TO BE USED. โA brief prayer preceding this spontaneous blessing, the ordained minister could ask that the individuals have peace, health, a spirit of patience, dialogue, and mutual assistanceโbut also Godโs light and strength to be able to fulfill his will completelyโ (par. 38).
6. To avoid โany form of confusion or scandal,โ that when a couple in an irregular situation or same-s*x couples ask for a blessing, it โshould never be imparted in concurrence with the ceremonies of a civil union, and not even in connection with them. Nor can it be performed with any clothing, gestures, or words that are proper to a weddingโ (par. 39).
7. This kind of blessing โmay instead find its place in other contexts, such as a visit to a shrine, a meeting with a priest, a prayer recited in a group, or during a pilgrimageโ (par. 40).
8. โEven when a personโs relationship with God is clouded by sin, he can always ask for a blessing, stretching out his hand to Godโ and desiring a blessing โcan be the possible good in some situationsโ (par. 43)
ASK the question: What would Jesus do?
JESUS: โIt is not those who are well who need a physician, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentanceโ (Luke 5:31-32)
Our prayers and love for the Holy Father, champion of Church reforms and universal brotherhood, and dynamic evangelization.
