September is the month of su***de prevention and awareness, it is a time dedicated to raising awareness about mental health and to remind everyone that no person should have to suffer in silence. As part of this season, September 10 is observed as World Su***de Prevention Day by the International Association for Su***de Prevention (IASP) and the World Health Organization (WHO). Today, we must dedicate a moment to bring each other together and promote understanding, compassion, and hope within our community.
The theme for World Su***de Prevention Day
for the years 2024 to 2026 is βChanging the Narrative on Su***deβ. The theme encourages having honest conversations and forming compassionate relationships with one another to break down the stigma regarding the discussion of su***de. It also considers a change in policy, so that people may have more accessible mental health care with evidence-proven solutions. This is so people will not be afraid or ashamed to share their experiences because of the negative views and misunderstandings surrounding the topic of mental health.
By spreading awareness of mental health and normalizing the discussion of su***de, we can promote a more caring environment where people can be understood and heard; an environment where we can both heal and learn as a community. Even a simple act of kindness can make someone feel less isolated. Let us keep helping one another and looking out for each other by promoting healthier ways to care for our mental well-being.
If you are struggling, remember that asking for help is a sign of strength, and you do not have to deal with everything by yourself.
