SHS-AdC Leaders’ Council: One of the Ten Accomplished Youth Organizations of the Philippines

Last March 11, 2023, the Sacred Heart School - Ateneo de Cebu Leaders’ Council, with their project LOVE TO LEARN: LEARN TO EARN, emerged as one of the Ten Accomplished Youth Organizations of the Philippines at the Far Eastern University Auditorium.

The student-led flagship project strives to empower and reform “Children in Conflict with the Law” (CICLs) through scouting. The project was conducted in the DSWD F.O. VII Regional Rehabilitation Center for Youth in Candabong, Argao, which houses youth in conflict with the law from all over the Central Visayas Region. The project consisted of two parts. The first part was a livelihood skills training program that aimed to raise funds to buy the necessary equipment and supplies for baking skills training for the youth. The second part of the program involved conducting regular scouting formations to teach the youth scouting values, such as Christ-centeredness, respect, and kindness, as well as scouting skills like first aid, urban gardening, and knot-tying.

With this, the program imparted a tremendous impact on the youth. After the baking training programs, all the youths were able to bake their own food, which allowed them to be certified for jobs and start businesses. The center was also able to save almost 20k a month as a result of the self-sufficiency of the CICLs in making their own food.

One of the released youth—whose parents are unavailable, went from selling shabu to selling “siakoy” or fried bread in his local community. Additionally, another CICL who had been released shared that he refused to transport a kilo of drugs, despite being offered 100k pesos, because of the guidance and good values he received through the project’s lessons.

Therese Erlyn Napuli, the proponent of the project, said, “These are just a few examples of how we change lives one neckerchief at a time!”

Driven by their passion and collective efforts, the project was acknowledged as one of the top ten accomplished youth organizations. The project successfully shaped the youth into becoming more polite, helpful, responsible, hopeful, and clearer in their goals after joining its programs. The success of the project was driven by their leadership and willingness to serve the youth.

SHS Students participate in International Model United Nations Online Conference 157.0

The Humanities and Social Science (HUMSS) students from the Senior High School Department participated in the International Model United Nations (IMUN) Online Conference 157.0 last April 22 - 23, 2023 via ZOOM.

The topic for this IMUN Online Conference 157.0 that the students got to participate in was Mitigating Cyber-bullying and Harassment.

Raissa Shaine Dumagan as a delegate for Mexico, Hannah Julia F. Agudo as a delegate for Turkey, Llew Grephen Loayon as a delegate for Iceland, and Biena Gem Venice Miñoza as a delegate for Italy got to engage with other delegates across the globe to discuss the issue, formulate potential solutions for their respective countries, and test their knowledge of what they learned as HUMSS students.

Raissa Shaine Dumagan of Grade 11 - Gratia and as a delegate for Mexico was awarded as Honourable Mention of the Conference.

Biena Gem Venice Miñoza of Grade 11 - Gaudium and as a delegate for Italy mentioned that she felt nervous participating in such an international-level conference. “I got insecure with myself, thinking my opening statement wasn’t good enough,” she said. “But the delegates and chairpersons were approachable and reached out to everyone that it felt casual for me to speak out.”.

Llew Grephen Loayon of Grade 11 - Gratia and as a delegate for Iceland also stated that it felt very new to attend that kind of conference and that he gained so much insight from the 2-day experience. He said, “IMUN, however, brought me a lot of insights in regards to the topic assigned which is Cyberbullying, and I was astonished to realize that there are a lot of discussions in mitigating the issue.”.

Prior to the online conference, HUMSS teacher, Mr. Kendrick William Miralles coached the students along with explaining the rule of procedure to help them prepare. He mentioned that he was excited because this would be the first IMUN participation of the school, and that he was really impressed with how the HUMSS students did. “This impressive start of MUN participation is a fertile opportunity for the Social Sciences to showcase what our HUMSS Ateneo Hearters have globally.” he said.

SHS-AdC Wins CESAFI Hip Hop Competition 2023

On April 21, 2023, SHS-AdC’s AG!LA and ABDT team bested six other competitors in the high school division for their first-ever win of the CESAFI Hip Hop Competition in the University of Southern Philippines Foundation theatre.

Chester Mabanag, Rovynne Jabas, and Ricky Gabriel choreographed AG!LA’s performance under the advisory of ABDT Moderator Jamaica Louise R. Ortega and AG!LA Moderator John Patrick Roble.

The participating schools in the competition were Don Bosco Technical College, Cebu Institute of Technology - University, University of Southern Philippines Foundation, Cebu Eastern College, University of San Carlos, University of Cebu - Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue, and Sacred Heart School - Ateneo de Cebu.

The University of San Carlos’s team took second place in the high school division, while the Cebu Institute of Technology - University’s team took third.

“Winning was one of our goals, but ultimately the one thing we wanted to achieve most was a performance we would never regret. I am extremely proud of everyone [on] our team, because ever since day 1 of practice, seeing everyone grow not just as dancers but as people [has been] such a sight to see. Thank you so much to the team, our choreographers, families, and supporters for making this a CESAFI experience I will never forget” AG!LA governor Raymond Edward Tampus told Molave News.

Hard Work Pays Off for CESAFI Champs!

Last April 19, 2023, Sacred Heart School - Ateneo de Cebu participated in the CESAFI Science quiz bowl held at Robinsons Galleria Cebu, represented by Daniel Shimizu of Grade 11 - Spes and Eve Bianca Ysabelle Barrameda and Joaquin Vicente de Larrazabal of Grade 10 - Loyola. The team was coached by Senior High School teachers Mr. Nathaniel Niar and Ms. Pia Cinco.

Shimizu, along with the two other representatives, dedicated a portion of their academic learning hours to prepare for the competition thoroughly. They reaped the benefits of their hard work when they took home the championship title with a whopping 38 points as their final score.

The brilliance and outstanding dedication of the team were more than enough to bring home the championship for the school. According to one of their coaches, Mr. Nathaniel Niar, “The students were all very brilliant and outstanding, so Ms. Pia Cinco and I only needed to guide them through enriching their learnings.”

Once again, we extend our appreciation to the school’s representatives for showcasing the leadership and excellence of SHS-AdC—looking forward to your future endeavors!

We open our submissions for both CREATIVE WORKS and ACADEMIC WORKS! And good news, you can submit as many entries in the different categories as YOU WANT!

All works must be submitted to any language, communication, media, arts, writing, humanities, and social sciences teacher or to any HUMSS faculty.

The work must then be ENDORSED by the subject teacher who originally received the output.

Ateneo Opens Its Doors

On the very 1st of April 2023, Sacred Heart School - Ateneo de Cebu opened its doors and held an open house event from 8:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M.

A talk on Truth, Meaning, and Relativism by Bro. Eugene Isaac D. Leaño was attended by students from the Humanities and Social Sciences strand (HUMSS). The program was emceed by Kristen Shay Coloscos and Harin Cho of 12 Eloquentia. Simultaneously, while the talk by Bro. Leaño was ongoing, the Grade 11 students of the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) showcased a select number of their capstone outputs. The works of Grade 11 Pax, Grade 11 Lux, Grade 11 Veritas, Grade 11 Vita, Grade 11 Spes, and Grade 11 Gravitas were exhibited.

From 10:30 A.M to 12:30 P.M., the Grade 11 students under the HUMSS strand attended a film showing at the Virginia Chiongbian Theatre. In appreciation of the work done by the students, the respective outputs of Grade 11 Gratia and Grade 11 Gaudium were presented on stage. The contents of the mini booklet outputs, “Anna” for Grade 11 Gaudium and “Lorenzo” for Grade 11 Gratia, were read onstage by the artists. Then, the mini bio-films — “Lorenzo” for Grade 11 Gaudium and “Lara” for Grade 11 Gratia — were shown.

The event concluded with the screening of the Filipino indie film "Respeto," introduced by Mr. Kendrick William Miralles. The film is about a young aspiring rapper who forms an unexpected friendship with an elderly bookstore owner haunted by his dark past.

From 12:30 P.M. to 1:30 P.M., a Concentrix information session was held at the Pope Francis Hall. The talk was open to all, students and guests alike. Following the talk, an information session on the Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) was held at the same venue from 1:45 P.M. to 2:45 P.M. The session included information on what an individual needs to know about Singapore and SIM. Mr. Gavin Go gave the first part of the presentation through a live Zoom call, covering Singapore’s proactive steps towards sustainability and how it has been embedded in the institution.

A final information session on WISE Immigration and Study Services was held at the Pope Francis Hall. A representative from the agency, Ms. Sheryl, discussed the study program for Canada and the various services the agency offers.

Simultaneous with the talks, sessions, and film showings that the Grade 11 students attended, the Grade 12 students from all three strands were the presenters for the day as they showcased their academic works. In the morning, the Grade 12 Accountancy, Business, and Management (ABM) students successfully defended their Research projects in the Multi-Purpose Rooms while the Grade 12 STEM students held the strand’s first-ever Bioentrepeneurship Summit in the Multi-Purpose Hall. In this summit, the STEM students showcased their start-up business plans and corresponding bioprosthesis that addressed various medical illnesses.

In the afternoon, the Grade 12 STEM and HUMSS students had their turn in orally defending their Research Projects from a panel of experts. Meanwhile, exemplary works and submissions of Grade 12 students from the Contemporary Philippine Arts, Business Chinese, and Media Information Literacy subjects were exhibited on the second floor of the Senior High School Building.

The day ended with a tour of the different exhibitions around the floors of the Senior High School building.

Senior High School Department Closes Magis Fest 2023

On March 18, 2023, the Senior High community gathered for the official closing program in the Magis Eagles Arena to conclude Magis Fest 2023.

Louis Arvin Gio, Nicole Villoria, Jire Patindol, Matt Melgar, and Kristen Shay Coloscos emceed the program.

The program started with the invocation, entrances of Mr. and Ms. Magis Fest winners and banner bearers, and introduction of chant and dance competition judges and mechanics.

The various performances by each house proceeded, starting with the house speaker’s speech, followed by the house’s chant and dance performances.

The event also featured various performances by Aviden, winners of the solo singing and vocal showdown competitions, and SHS-AdC alumnus and Dream Maker contestant Neil Limbaga.

Proceeded were the awarding of the certificate of appreciation to the chant and dance judges, Senior High School principal Annie Abucay’s closing remarks, and awarding of the different awards.

On March 17, 2023, the Senior High community gathered for the first day of Magis Fest 2023, a comeback of the two-year hiatus.

This year’s Magis Fest was themed, “Fueling the Magis in YOUth for Engaged Citizenship— A Call to Social Change.” The ISLC organized the event.

The event started with the assembly at the Lux Oriens Gym, followed by a parade around the campus.

Reinor Skie Cabahug, Mikhaela Dato, and Thea Demetrio emceed the morning program. Proceeded were the invocation, singing of the Philippine national anthem, Magis Fest trailer viewing, and lighting of friendship flame.

SHS-AdC president Fr. Michael Pineda, SJ, then officially opened the event, which was followed by a Zumba session.

The various representatives from each house then competed in the solo singing competition, vocal showdown, and Mr. and Ms. Magis Fest. The event also featured various performances by Aviden, ABM faculty member Mr. Allen Tam, and different games.

Then followed were the viewing of posters, films, seals, and T-shirt designs, as well as the sports competitions.

On this day, March 11, 2023, the 256 confirmands of which most were from the Grade 11 of the Senior High School Department received their confirmation during the mass presided by Archbishop Antonio Ledesma, S.J, D.D. and concelebrated by Fr. Mike Pineda, S.J. and Fr. Nono Levosada, S.J. in the Magis Eagles Arena.

In his homily, Most Reverend Ledesma shared the five meanings of being anointed with the chrism and receiving the sacrament. First, being anointed means being the chosen one. In the bible, it was Jesus Christ who was anointed as the chosen one while now it makes one to be recognized with a special dignity. Second, it means that a mission is given. It is to share the good news to everyone without exception the same way the disciples had done, and to also continue their work of evangelization in today’s world. Third, it is a vocation or a calling to be Christians that transform the world, bring the Spirit with all endeavours in life, and enact environmental care and safe-keeping. Fourth, it also means togetherness with the Spirit where it serves as a guide that teaches and leads what an adult Christian should be and do in today’s world. Most Rev. Ledesma reminds that it is the responsibility of Christians to discern with their own hearts and conscience as they navigate through their lives and listen to the Spirit. Lastly, being anointed means to live and follow the Spirit where it brings with it the task of growing the fruit of generosity, love, joy, peace, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Most Rev. Ledesma ended by expressing that today can also be a moment to thank the Lord for sharing the Spirit with all of us.

Right after, the confirmands renewed their Baptismal Vows and proceeded with undergoing the Rite of Anointing where they were each accompanied by their godparents. The parents, guardians, teachers, administrators, and guests of the confirmands were also in attendance.

SHS-AdC’s Inculturated Holy Mass and Program

On February 2, 2023, it was certainly an early morning for Ateneo Hearters. After all, it was the day of the scheduled Chinese Lunar New Year Celebration for the Year of the Water Rabbit!

The day began at 7:40 AM, wherein all students were to arrive and settle down at the Magis Eagles Arena. After the students, faculty, and staff had finished settling in, Ateneo's Inculturated Holy Mass in Celebration of the Lunar New Year 2023 began.

The start of the mass was signaled by a short dance from the Dragon Dance performers of Grade 9 Xavier. The main theme of the mass was the “New Year, the Year of the Water Rabbit,” presided by Father Mike Nono and Msgr. Joseph Tan.

After the Mass had ended, there was a short intermission to congratulate AG!LA on their recent victory as the Music & Motion competition champions. They then gave the school a short dance presentation.

Following AG!LA’s invigorating presentation, the drums played to signal the start of the morning program, accompanied by the re-entry of Grade 9 Xavier's Dragon Dancers.

After everyone settled down with the entry of the dragon dancers came the many different presentations prepared to showcase the school’s Chinese-Filipino Cultural Heritage.

First came the Grade 6 students with their lively dance entitled “Wish You Good Luck.” Afterward, Sinead Reese Canlas, a Grade 5 student, performed her song "Best Wishes for a Happy New Year," which was followed by a modern dance called "Planting Season."

Finally, the morning program concluded with a song entitled "A Prosperous Year," performed by the school's very own Yesha Suralta. The school cheered one final time to close the program as she sang her heart out with joy and vigor.

To officially close the morning's events, the dragon dancers made one final dance as they made their exit, and Yesha Suralta and Rojo Galvan led the singing of our school hymn, the Lux Oriens.

AGILA, the Undefeated Champions of Music & Motion

The trophy remains in the hands of the Agila - Ateneo de Cebu team, who have just claimed their Back-to-Back title after winning the 2023 Music & Motion dance competition as champion.

The 2023 Music & Motion competition was held on January 28 at the Don Bosco Technical College Gymnasium, with a tight match between ACT Main, ACT Bulacao, Don Bosco, St. Benedict Childhood Education Centre, UC - Banilad, Pau Excellencia, University of San Jose - Recolectos, Saint Louis College - Cebu, and Sacred Heart School - Ateneo de Cebu.

Last December 14, 2022, the Agila team began training with choreographers Chester Mabanag, Rovynne Jabas, and Ricky Gabriel under the supervision of their moderators, Ms. Ortega and Mr. Roble.

Months of daily practices by the Agila team, fueled by their hard work and determination, were more than enough to earn them a spot on the podium alongside the first runner-up, Saint Louis College - Cebu, and the second runner-up, St. Benedict. Indeed, it was a good fight with the trophy in sight.

SHS holds 1st General Assembly of 2023
The Senior High School Department held its 1st General Assembly of the year with the theme "Cultivating Cultures: A Reverence to Our Chinese-Filipino Roots." on January 27, 2023, at the Magis Eagles Arena.

Grade 12 - Magnanimitas, Grade 12 - Humilitas, and Grade 12 - Sapientia sponsored the morning assembly.

They performed a skit and dance presentation on what it means to cultivate Chinese and Filipino cultures through the celebrations of both Sinulog and Chinese New Year

The IC2E program, Agila, Academic Awards, and Sports Awards were also recognized during the event.

After the assembly, a Tai Chi session was held for the wellness of the students, teachers, and administration. The session was instructed by 惜毅 Oj Hofer, Dr. Kenneth Ng, and Lucille Yu.
