At age sixteen, however, obedient to her spiritual director and her parents, she married Teodoro de Mas, a lawyer, with whom she shared a deeply holy marriage. Together they had nine children, and Joaquima devoted herself entirely to their Christian upbringing while continuing an intense life of prayer and care for the poor. After her husband died in 1816, she discerned her long-awaited call to religious life.
In 1826, she founded the Carmelite Sisters of Charity in Vic, Spain, dedicated to educating children and caring for the sick. The congregation spread rapidly across Spain. During the political upheaval of the 1830s she was forced into exile and suffered greatly, yet never wavered in her mission.
