At age sixteen, however, obedient to her spiritual director and her parents, she married Teodoro de Mas, a lawyer, with whom she shared a deeply holy marriage. Together they had nine children, and Joaquima devoted herself entirely to their Christian upbringing while continuing an intense life of prayer and care for the poor. After her husband died in 1816, she discerned her long-awaited call to religious life.

In 1826, she founded the Carmelite Sisters of Charity in Vic, Spain, dedicated to educating children and caring for the sick. The congregation spread rapidly across Spain. During the political upheaval of the 1830s she was forced into exile and suffered greatly, yet never wavered in her mission. Married at age fifteen to Count John of Civitella, she persuaded her husband to live in continence, dedicating their marriage entirely to God and charity. When the Count died shortly after, Angelina began gathering other noblewomen and widows into a community of Franciscan tertiaries committed to prayer and service.

She was briefly exiled from the Kingdom of Naples after false accusations of witchcraft โ€” her 'crime' being that she convinced young noblewomen not to marry and instead follow God. Undaunted, she established the first community of Franciscan Third Order Regular sisters in Foligno, Italy, in 1397 โ€” a pioneering step for consecrated religious life for women. She founded thirteen convents before her death in 1435.

They were beatified in 1920 by Pope Benedict XV and canonized by Pope Paul VI in 1964. In 1969, Pope Paul VI became the first pontiff to visit sub-Saharan Africa, where he consecrated the Namugongo Martyrs Shrine built at the site of their death.

The month of May is dedicated to our beloved Mother Mary, and it is truly inspiring to witness young children faithfully offering their afternoons in participation in the Flores de Mayo. Through the offering of flowers, they learn to honor and express their love for the Blessed Virgin Mary.

On May 30, 2026, children, parents, and various mandated organizations gathered together to celebrate the culmination of this beautiful Marian tradition. The event was filled with joy, devotion, and gratitude as the community united in honoring our Blessed Mother.

May we always imitate the childlike faith of these little ones, entrusting our cares, hopes, and prayers to Mother Mary, who lovingly leads us to her Son, Jesus Christ.
