Meet Emma, Eleison's Operations Assistant! Emma supports the Eleison team with financial reporting and assists in documenting Eleison's monitoring and evaluation (M&E) activities. Specifically, Emma supports Eleison's Executive Director with budget planning, tracking program outputs and outcomes, and grant financial management and reporting. In a recent newsletter article, Emma shared about what she has learned working at Eleison and how she appreciates the close-knit and supportive environment within the Eleison team. We have completed all data collection for our joint research project with the University of Nottingham Rights Lab and the International Justice Mission exploring people's reliance upon public justice systems for protection against online sexual abuse and exploitation of children (TIP-OSAEC) cases, including child sexual abuse and exploitation material (CSAEM) and livestreaming cases in the Philippines. The Eleison team conducted key informant interviews (KIIs) with community stakeholders and focus group discussions (FGDs) with survivors across three sites in the Philippines -- Mindanao, Manila, and Cebu. We look forward to our ongoing collaboration with the Rights Lab in embarking on data analysis and using study findings to strengthen systems to protect children.

We are continuing to implement trauma-informed yoga programming for survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV) in the Hudson Valley through our ongoing partnership with Family Services in Poughkeepsie, NY. Trauma-informed yoga is an accessible form of mental health support that combines bodily movement, mindfulness practices, and breathwork while focusing on each participant’s unique needs and healing. The program’s focus on the mind-body connection can enhance a sense of safety in the body, stabilize stress hormones, strengthen emotional regulation, and improve overall well-being. We look forward to continuing to expand our partnerships in increasing access to trauma-informed yoga programming in the Hudson Valley.

We were delighted to host our collaborators from California Baptist University (CBU) during their recent trip to the Philippines. We are partnering with the CBU Division of Social Work to co-develop on a toolkit to teach social workers how to conduct community based participatory research (CBPR) co-led with survivors of human trafficking. During the CBU team's recent trip, our Survivor Leadership Council (SLC) and the CBU team met to discuss ongoing refinement of the toolkit. We are grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with the CBU team on this important project and look forward to releasing the toolkit for social work faculty, students, and anti-trafficking organizations.

We are excited to share our new publication from our photovoice research on survivor leadership in the anti-trafficking sector. In this project, our Survivor Leadership Council (SLC) collaborated with other members of the Eleison team to conduct arts-based research exploring the meaning of survivor leadership and develop recommendations for the sector on how survivor leadership can be strengthened. We recently completed the latest cohort of our Connection and Recovery after Exploitation (CARE) Groups program with youth who have experienced online sexual exploitation of children (OSEC) and other forms of human trafficking. The CARE Groups program is a structured 8-session support group program designed for youth OSEC and CSEC survivors. Sessions focus on helping youth learn strategies to identify and manage their emotions, including reducing unhealthy ways of managing emotions and strengthening self-regulation techniques. CARE Groups integrate supportive group discussions to encourage open communication, build peer support, and create a safe space in which survivors can express themselves.

As a part of our community mental health programming, we offer free mental health workshops in the community for survivors of human trafficking and gender-based violence and their support persons, including service providers, family members, and friends. These interactive, skills-based workshops cover a variety of topics, including stress management, managing emotions, healthy relationships, healthy communication, and health and wellness. We have recently completed the 9th cohort of the Healing and Resilience after Trauma (HaRT) Cebu program with 18 survivors of human trafficking and gender-based violence. HaRT Cebu is 12-week trauma-informed program that integrates mindfulness practices, yoga poses, breathing exercises, and supportive group discussions to provide a safe environment for survivors’ healing. We express our thanks to the United Nations Voluntary Trust Fund for Contemporary Forms of Slavery and the Harry Shapiro Charitable Foundation for supporting our implementation of this important program.

We recently completed focus group discussions (FGD) with survivors of online sexual exploitation of children (OSEC) and the commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC) in Mindanao and Manila for our joint research project with the University of Nottingham Rights Lab and the International Justice Mission. This study examines how vulnerable populations rely on the criminal justice system for protection against online sexual abuse and exploitation of children (TIP-OSAEC) cases, including child sexual abuse and exploitation material (CSAEM) and livestreaming cases in the Philippines. We look forward to integrating survivors' recommendations in efforts to strengthen justice system responses to OSEC.

We are partnering with the California Baptist University (CBU) Division of Social Work on an innovative project funded by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) to co-develop on a toolkit on how to conduct community based participatory research (CBPR) co-led with survivors of human trafficking. Our Survivor Leadership Council (SLC) recently met to review and discuss feedback on the latest draft of this toolkit. The collaboration between Eleison's SLC and the CBU Division of Social Work in creating this toolkit exemplifies our commitment to bridging the gap between academia and community organizations co-led with survivors. We look forward to our ongoing partnership with CBU in completing this toolkit.
