It’s a wrap! 💚

Day 3 brought us back to the heart of why we gathered — to build a future of food anchored in young leaders, local solutions, and shared purpose. We’ve planted seeds of Bayanihan across public secondary schools and with it, a future of food that is human, hopeful, and homegrown.

Our keynote speakers reminded us what’s possible when we invest in education and empowerment:
🗣️ Salvador O. Ochavo, CESO V, Schools Division Superintendent, SDO Silay City
🗣️ Felizardo Colambo, Director, Deputy General for Special Concerns, TESDA Central Office
🗣️ Bobby Magalona, Provincial Management Team Head, Gawad Kalinga

In the final plenary, we heard from the next generation of agri-champions:
🌱 Norhaya Demacaling, SEED Philippines
🌱 Seth Luigi Borbon, Clawseth Aquafarm
🌱 Japhet Tabale, Cacao Prince

The summit was officially closed by Mark Lawrence Cruz, School Director of SEED Philippines, with a reminder that what we’ve planted here in soil, in students, in communities, will keep growing.

To our generous partners and sponsors: NAPSSPHIL, DepEd, City of Silay, Doña Montserrat Lopez Memorial High School, Tateh Aquafeeds and Gawad Kalinga — thank you for believing in this movement.

The afternoon plenary highlighted best practices in local food production led by young voices who are already shaping the future on the ground.

Rad Inopia shared how community farming becomes sustainable when it’s people-powered. Joshua Alaba talked about tilapia production and making aquaculture work for local communities. John Sherwin Felix reminded us that food is also in our forests — in biodiversity, culture, and heritage.

Young, grounded, and doing the work! This is what leadership in food systems looks like. 🌱🐟🌳

Day 2 started strong with keynote messages that grounded us in the bigger picture of agriculture and education.

Engr. Jose Albert Barrogo, OIC-Regional Executive Director of DA–Negros Island Region, and Dir. Remelyn Recoter, National Director of ATI, called on young leaders and schools to help build sustainable food systems starting from education and extending into the communities.

The morning plenary focused on fisheries and aquaculture, with insights from Merry Joy Enriquez of Tateh Aquafeeds, Kiko Torno of 7 Hectares, and Mayo Antonio Cueva of Sagay LGU’s ENRO. The conversation centered on how we can boost food production in sustainable ways that improve production without compromising the environment, so communities can grow more with care and intention.

The first plenary dug deep into what it really means to build a culture of productivity in farming — not just growing more, but making sure farmers earn, markets are accessible, and agriculture becomes a real path forward for communities.

Elvin Laceda, a young entrepreneur and CEO of Rise Up, shared how connecting farmers to markets starts with listening to them. Bea Emma Bachinela, Program Chair of Agribusiness Management at the University of St. La Salle, laid out where Philippine agriculture stands, what needs to shift — and captured it best: "No agri, no food. No food, no life."

And as the session closed, we turned the mic to the participants. In our Harvest of Insights segment, students and teachers shared what struck them most from personal realizations to concrete actions they’re bringing back to their schools. 🌱

Because at the heart of Bayanihan, everyone’s voice matters.

At the heart of food security is a deeper question: Who are we raising, and what are we growing them for?

During the keynote on Day 1, Ernersto L. Duremdes, Supervising TESD Specialist of TESDA Negros Occidental, shared a powerful reminder: the future of our food systems rests in the hands of those who grow and produce food and that future depends on how we value those who work closest to the land, sea, and forest. 🌾🌊🌲

Dan Bercasio, Executive Director of Gawad Kalinga, followed with a challenge rooted in truth: 44.1% or 51 million Filipinos face moderate to severe food insecurity (UN, 2023). He called on educators to prepare the next generation not just in academics but in growing food and building resilience. “If the youth are part of growing food, no child should go hungry.”

Two keynotes that set the tone for the summit: food security is not just a policy, it’s a movement, and it starts with people.

We kicked off the Bayanihan sa Paaralan Summit last May 28 in Silay, Negros Occidental with over 400 participants from 11 regions gathered to take on one of the biggest challenges facing our schools and communities: food security.

From warm welcomes to a school-led Countryside Fair, Day 1 opened with energy, purpose, and a glimpse of what’s possible when schools take the lead in growing food systems.

We were welcomed by Hon. Thomas Maynard J. Ledesma, Vice Mayor of Silay City, followed by opening remarks from Mr. Warlito Rosareal, National President of the National Association of Public Secondary School of the Philippines both highlighting the importance of collective action in shaping the future of food and education. 🌱

The Bayanihan sa Paaralan Summit is a 3-day gathering of educators and student leaders reimagining how schools can grow food, build communities, and lead change. Rooted in the values of bayan, bayani, ani, and bayanihan, the movement continues to flourish through the leadership of our public schools. 💚

Held in partnership with Gawad Kalinga, NAPSSPHIL, Department of Education and LGU Silay.
