CHED AI INTEGRATION TO ENGINEERING PROFESSIONS

The IECEP President as a Technical Panel for Electronics Engineering together with Former President Dr. May Rose Castro-Imperial participating in the recent initiative of the Commission on Higher Education to gather all Technical Panels from various engineering professions to discuss on how to navigate and implement appropriate measures on how to synergize the various course objectives, subjects and electives towards the emergence of essential technological innovation that surpasses common norms and distinctions among various engineering courses.

The workshop aims to discuss and deliberate on the proposed integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) courses and related competencies into engineering program curricula, as well as other emerging curriculum concerns, including the revised Philippine Qualification Framework (PQF), the level alignment matrix, and the Philippine Credit Transfer System (PCTS).

The Workshop will allow the Technical panels to share their expertise and perspectives, identify discipline-specific considerations, and discuss appropriate approaches to addressing these curriculum concerns. The discussions are intended to support the development and enhancement of engineering curricula that are responsive to the emerging technologies, aligned with the PQF and other relevant national frameworks, and responsive to the evolving needs of the industries and the engineering profession as a whole.

Representing our ECE profession as a Technical Panel and President of IECEP allows us to stress our point on our relevance and contribution to the various engineering programs and to the future learners and manpower-engine of growth of the country in the field of Artificial Intelligence and to the Information revolution as a whole. We will take a multi-pronged approach on setting our expertise from the Senior High School STEM Learners to the ECE students and to the practicing Electronics Engineer to ensure compatibility, harmony and excellence.

The IECEP President, James Rodney P. Santiago, initiated a preliminary consultative meeting with the Department of Education on September 7, 2026, to establish a cooperative working relationship regarding the introduction and promotion of the Electronics Engineering program to Senior High School students enrolled in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) program.

It was highlighted that, based on previous initiatives of DepEd and feedback from SHS learners, Electronics Engineering was not given ample attention compared with other engineering programs. As such, we would like to establish closer cooperation and a strong partnership to help DepEd pursue a solid, technology-driven preparatory education for Technical/Vocational and Electronics Engineering.

The Electronics Engineering program is a principal course that fuels the engine of the Philippines' global competitiveness, with significant contributions to the economy, particularly in the fields of electronics manufacturing, testing, packaging, Information Technology, biomedical applications, ICT, communications, AI, IoT, microwave technology, satellite systems, computer systems, data centers, among others. With this, we would like to contribute to helping DepEd steer the direction of the next generation of learners and young professionals toward the appropriate academic and career pathways they wish to pursue. Electronics Engineering, as an opportunity and career pathway, shall always be open to our SHS learners.

The IECEP President will participate in the upcoming “Workshop on the Mapping of the Strengthened Senior High School (SHS) Electives to Higher Education Programs,” scheduled on September 16, 2026, at the DepEd Office in Techzone Building, Malugay, Makati City. As we have been personally invited by DepEd to participate and contribute to the formulation of essential topics in the SHS Electives, this represents a significant milestone in promoting the Electronics Engineering program to SHS learners.

The DepEd official who arranged the first exploratory meeting at their office is Ms. Lilia Lagrimas. The DepEd committee in charge of the External Partnerships Service is headed by Asec. Cilette Liboro Co.
