CARA’s Statement regarding the Board of Trustees’ Decision on the Community Cats at Kai Garden Residences

We urge the members of the Kai Garden Residences Board of Trustees to rethink their decision on the removal of community cats in the property.

The volunteers of Kai Garden Residences have submitted to the Board their well-substantiated and evidence-based position paper on why the natural presence of cats in the property is best managed with CNVR (Catch-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return). However, less than a day after, they have released their decision to still ban feeding the cats and to ultimately have all the cats caught by an external entity since the Mandaluyong Animal Shelter does not have the facility to handle cats.

It’s important to know that the volunteer group has managed to have at least 80% of their monitored cats spayed and neutered, so that the cat population here has been stabilized and controlled. A regular feeding schedule in designated feeding areas has also been established. Furthermore, a number of cats have been adopted into good homes already. These are far better ways to respond to residents’ complaints in a shared community. To displace the lives of these innocent cats, and of new ones that will inevitably come in when the old cats are ejected, is definitely not a sustainable solution.
