Cartwheel Foundation, Inc.

Cartwheel Foundation, Inc. Cartwheel Foundation seeks to nurture Filipino indigenous heritage through culturally relevant education where it is needed the most.

23/04/2026

Cartwheel Foundation continues to co-create indigenized learning materials with partner communities, drawing from indigenous knowledge systems to enrich education and celebrate cultural identity. From the Halina’t Magkulay! series to the 10 Rights of a Child workbook, these resources highlight both cultural heritage and everyday self-care practices for children.

All materials are free of charge, but a formal request is required to receive a copy. This ensures that each resource is shared responsibly and reaches communities who will benefit most.

Through these efforts, Cartwheel strengthens pathways toward culturally relevant education, empowered indigenous voices, and a thriving heritage that young learners can proudly call their own.

With gratitude, we share the launch of the Community Nutrition and Health Education Project (CNHEP) in Sitio Kaulayanan, Barangay Lirongan, Talakag, Bukidnon.

Following community consultations and planning from January to February, the project was formally introduced through a soft launch on March 4, 2026, and inaugurated on March 16, 2026.

Rooted in Cartwheel’s Education and Child Development (ECD) model, CNHEP focuses on sustaining supplementary feeding for Talaandig children over a seven-month period, to help address gaps beyond existing feeding programs through close collaboration with parents and the community.

This initiative is made possible through the partnership of Sitio Kaulayanan tribal leaders and community members, Fr. Leoni Mission Foundation, Inc., and Barangay Local Government Unit (BLGU) of Lirongan, with funding support from Bank of China.

Thank you to our implementing partner, FLMFI, to Bank of China for its generous support, and to the Talaandig community of Sitio Kaulayanan for their trust and leadership.

In preparation for the eventual turn over of the Sama Bajau Activity Center to the local government of Parañaque, Cartwheel met with the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) Parañaque and other local offices last March 24, 2026.

The Activity Center was put up to cater to the young Sama Bajau residing in Parañaque City to have access to early childhood education, that at the same time nurtures their cultural identity. It has been running for the past seven (7) years and has reached over a hundred children, many of whom are now continuing their education in grade school.

The meeting was led by Mr. Arthur Glenn Pacaño of the CSWDO, and was attended by the Local Civil Registrar Office, Public Employment Service Office, Livelihood Resource Management Office, and Barangay San Dionisio. Concrete steps and plans were discussed to ensure the sustainability and continuity of the program.

Cartwheel extends its heartfelt gratitude to the City of Parañaque, its local offices, and Barangay San Dionisio for working hand in hand with us.

We are proud to celebrate a meaningful milestone as 17 Early Childhood Development (ECD) completers from the ECD program in Sama-Bajau Activity Center in Parañaque City move up to Kindergarten in the upcoming school year.

This achievement reflects their hard work, curiosity, and growth throughout their early learning journey. It is also a celebration of the support of families, teachers, and the community who continue to guide and nurture them every step of the way.

As they take this next big step, we honor their progress and look forward to seeing them continue to learn, grow, and thrive in their new learning environment. 💛

Last March 14, 2026, young Sama Bajau learners from the Activity Center in San Dionisio, Paranaque were invited to participate in iREAD, a reading comprehension and arts bootcamp led by iAcademy in Makati City.

The initiative aimed to extend iAcademy’s reach to more partner communities by providing meaningful and culturally relevant learning experiences. The activities include basic reading and writing exercises, recognizing colors and lines, and creating posters. Faculty members from iAcademy were present throughout the event, guiding and supporting the learners as they completed each activity.

It was a successful event where our young Sama Bajau learners had the opportunity to enhance their creativity and self-expression, and enjoy a fun and engaging day.

Cartwheel is truly grateful to its partner for extending support and opening meaningful learning opportunities for the learners.

As we wrap up the celebration of Women’s Month, we honor Gina Alfonso—Cartwheel’s Founder and President—whose “yes” to community-led education in 1998 planted the seeds of hope that grew into Cartwheel Foundation.

From the opening of Sta. Teresita Pre-School to national recognition, Gina’s vision and leadership helped shape Cartwheel’s values of collaboration, empowerment, and co-ownership.

Today, Cartwheel continues to thrive—thanks to women like Gina, whose courage and commitment inspire us to honor and uplift women everywhere.
