Sama-Bajau learners and their families from the Sama-Bajau Activity Center in Parañaque recently received grocery packs from Xavier School.

The grocery packs were distributed to families in the community, providing additional food supplies that they can bring home and share with their households.

The activity was made possible through Xavier School’s support for the Sama-Bajau community. We appreciate their continued generosity and for including our learners and their families in this effort!

In Kaulayanan, the Talaandig community helps shape an early learning experience that is meaningful to children and rooted in their culture.

At the Sama-Bajau Activity Center, hot meals are prepared and served by nanays from the community through the support of Cartwheel’s Daily School-based Feeding partner, Thrive

For the children, it’s a nutritious meal. For the nanays, it’s also a way to contribute to their families and be part of their children’s learning journey.

Because a healthy start is a community effort 💛

Cartwheel joined Sun Life Philippines Foundation’s annual Foundation Fair on August 5 at The Village, Sun Life Centre in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig.

With this year’s theme, “Shine Together: Celebrating Partnerships, Purpose, and Impact,” the event brought together organizations, employees, volunteers, and partners to celebrate meaningful partnerships and the work made possible through collaboration.

Representing Cartwheel were Sharrie Espiritu, Program Officer for Education, and Rhodabeth Atuel, Administrative Officer. They shared Cartwheel’s programs and impact stories through our booth, while also connecting with fellow advocates and partner organizations and exploring opportunities for future collaboration.

Cartwheel was invited last year by the Association of Foundations (AF) to be featured as a case study in the Philippines Charity Insights Report, under the theme “The Importance of the Right People.”

The report, part of the global World Giving Report 2025 by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF), looks at the experiences and perspectives of NGOs and foundations in the Philippines. AF facilitated the local survey, with 155 organizations sharing their insights on the realities of nonprofit work.

We are grateful for the opportunity to share Cartwheel’s experience and reflect on the people who make our work possible, from our community partners and teachers to our team, volunteers, and supporters.

Because meaningful work is shaped not only by what organizations do, but by the people who make it happen.

The Cartwheel team, together with representatives from Fr. Leoni Mission Foundation, Inc. met with Green Minds Incorporated co-founder and CEO Datu Reynaldo Gil “Rey” G. Lomarda on July 30, 2026, for an exploratory discussion on strengthening community development initiatives.

The conversation highlighted a strong alignment between Green Minds’ approach to capacity building and Cartwheel’s community development processes. This shared approach opens opportunities for future collaboration, particularly in supporting sustainable and community-led initiatives with our Talaandig partners in Kaulayanan.

We look forward to exploring how Green Minds can contribute to strengthening the work already being led by and with the community!

Last July 29, Cartwheel Program Officers Sharrie Espiritu and Yanna Cariño facilitated a Suli-suli, or kwentuhan session, with Sama-Bajau parents at the Sama-Bajau Activity Center in Parañaque.

The session began with a check-in and kumustahan, creating space for parents to share how they have been and what matters to them at this time. This was followed by a needs assessment, an introduction to the new school year and academic calendar, and discussions on possible livelihood opportunities with the City Livelihood Office.

Through Suli-suli, Cartwheel creates space to listen to the experiences, priorities, and insights of Sama-Bajau parents as programs are shaped with the community.

Last July 28, 2026, some team members from Thrive and Woolworths visited the Sama Bajau Activity Center in Parañaque City to spend time with the learners, teachers, and volunteer mother cooks.

The visit gave the partners an opportunity to experience a regular day at the Activity Center through classroom observation and participation, as well as helping prepare and serve meals during the school feeding program.

The visit gave them a chance to experience what a regular day looks like at the Activity Center and to better understand the Sama-Bajau community.

Cartwheel’s Education and Child Development Program and Young Indigenous Peoples (YIP) Leaders Program are rooted in culturally relevant education that values Indigenous knowledge, identity, and lived experiences while supporting Indigenous children and youth in their educational journey.

We’re happy to share that Cartwheel Foundation Inc accreditation has been renewed by the Philippine Council for NGO Certification (PCNC) for another five years!
