Today, we commemorate the EDSA People Power Revolution of 1986 โ a historic and peaceful uprising that restored democracy in the Philippines. Millions of Filipinos gathered along Epifanio de los Santos Avenue to call for change after years of authoritarian rule under former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr., particularly during the period of Martial Law (1972โ1981), which was marked by documented cases of human rights violations, censorship, arrests, and economic challenges. The revolution demonstrated that collective action, unity, and nonviolent resistance can alter the course of a nationโs history.
EDSA stands as a reminder of the importance of safeguarding democratic institutions and remaining informed about our past. Historical records from various commissions and organizations detail the experiences of individuals who endured political repression and abuses during Martial Law. Remembering these events is not about division, but about ensuring accountability, protecting freedoms, and learning from history so that future generations understand the value of constitutional rights and civic responsibility.
As discussions and public gatherings such as the planned โTrillion Peso Marchโ take place, we are reminded that civic engagement continues to shape our nationโs narrative. As students of Social Sciences, our role is to study events critically, seek verified information, and participate responsibly in democratic processes. May the spirit of EDSA inspire us to remain aware, informed, and committed to truth, justice, and the preservation of democratic values.
