Junji Ito is a Japanese manga artist who has become best known for his unforgettable horror manga titles, including Tomie, Uzumaki, and Gyo, and is widely regarded as one of the most influential creators working in contemporary horror manga today. His work stands out for its intricately detailed artwork, eerie and original concepts, deep psychological horror, and stories that leave you feeling deeply unsettled long after reading.
Ito was born on July 31, 1963, in Japan’s Gifu Prefecture. He developed a strong fascination with horror manga from an early age, drawing inspiration from pioneering artists like Kazuo Umezu and Hideshi Hino. Before making manga his full-time profession, he trained and worked as a dental technician, all while keeping up his drawing and writing in his spare time. Then in 1987, he entered a short horror story in a competition run by Monthly Halloween magazine and earned an honorable mention in the Kazuo Umezu Prize, this recognition became the stepping stone that launched his professional manga career.
Among his most celebrated works is Tomie, centered on a beautiful yet mysterious young woman whose presence alone sparks chaos and disturbing events wherever she goes. Another landmark piece is Uzumaki, a chilling tale about a coastal town gripped by an uncanny, growing curse tied to the shape of spirals. The story follows Kirie Goshima and Shuichi Saito as they watch their home descend into increasingly bizarre and terrifying circumstances. Gyo is another beloved title that blends horror with science fiction, telling the story of grotesque, fish-like creatures that emerge from the sea and begin taking over the land.
Beyond these major series, Ito has built an extensive body of work featuring standalone stories and collected volumes such as Black Paradox, Remina, Fragments of Horror, Shiver, Smashed, The Liminal Zone, and Venus in the Blind Spot. He has also put his own spin on classic literature: adapting Osamu Dazai’s No Longer Human into manga, and creating a manga version of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Several of his stories have been brought to life through film and anime adaptations as well.
When it comes to his personal life, Ito has kept most details private, choosing to focus on his craft rather than public attention. He has continued writing and drawing stories rooted in horror, the uncanny, and the unknown across a career spanning decades, earning a global readership along the way. His achievements include multiple Eisner Awards, and in 2025 he was honored with induction into the Will Eisner Comic Awards Hall of Fame.
Junji Ito’s work has left an indelible mark on both manga and the horror genre as a whole. Through his meticulous art style and boundless imagination, he has a rare gift for turning everyday, familiar people and situations into something profoundly disturbing and unforgettable. His stories continue to be read, loved, and adapted all over the world, cementing his place as one of the most vital and defining voices in modern Japanese horror manga.
