Advancing knowledge for a sustainable future, the third-year Environmental Science students successfully conducted ๐๐€๐‹๐€๐“ ๐Ÿ.๐ŸŽ, virtually bringing students and experts together in a meaningful exchange of ideas and research insights via Zoom and Facebook live.

The morning session opened with an inspirational message from ๐ƒ๐ซ. ๐„๐ฅ๐ž๐จ๐ง๐จ๐ซ ๐๐š๐ฌ๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐จ that set the tone for the day, emphasizing the role of student-researchers as the "protective skin" or balat of our environment.

๐ƒ๐ซ. ๐„๐ซ๐ข๐œ๐š ๐’๐ข๐ฅ๐ค ๐๐ž๐ฅ๐š ๐๐š๐ณ, ๐‹๐๐“ from De La Salle University and ๐‰๐š๐ฒ๐ฌ๐จ๐ง ๐†. ๐‚๐ก๐š๐ฏ๐ž๐ณ ๐ƒ๐ซ. ๐ซ๐ž๐ซ. ๐ง๐š๐ญ from the Department of Biological Sciences University of Santo Tomas served as guest speakers.

Dr. dela Paz shared โ€œ๐„๐ฑ๐ฉ๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐ž๐ง๐œ๐ž๐ฌ ๐ข๐ง ๐…๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ๐ก๐ฐ๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ซ ๐‘๐ž๐ฌ๐ž๐š๐ซ๐œ๐ก: ๐Œ๐จ๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ƒ๐ข๐ฌ๐œ๐จ๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐ž๐ฌ,โ€ where she reflected on her journey in research, highlighting the driving forces behind scientific inquiry and the insights gained from freshwater ecosystems. She remarked, โ€œ๐˜ž๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ท๐˜ฆ ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ต,โ€ noting that failure remains an inevitable part of the research process. Following this, Dr. Chavez delivered his talk, โ€œ๐๐ก๐ฒ๐ฅ๐จ๐ ๐ž๐ง๐ž๐ญ๐ข๐œ ๐’๐ฒ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ž๐ฆ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐œ๐ฌ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐€๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐ซ๐ก๐ž๐š & ๐“๐ข๐ฆ๐จ๐ง๐ข๐ฎ๐ฌ,โ€ focusing on the classification and evolutionary relationships of these plant groups, and underscoring the importance of systematics in understanding biodiversity.

Adding a touch of melody to the scholarly atmosphere, guest performer ๐‰๐ข๐ฆ ๐Š๐ฒ๐ฅ๐ž ๐•. ๐๐š๐ฌ๐œ๐ฎ๐š๐ฅ, vocalist from the CBEA Magnates Band captivated the audience with a musical intermission. The event concluded with an engaging open forum and formal closing remarks from the project head of BALAT 2.0 ๐Œ๐ซ. ๐Œ๐š๐ซ๐œ ๐†๐ž๐ฅ๐จ ๐ƒ๐ž ๐‹๐ž๐จ๐ง, where students and faculty reflected on the dayโ€™s learnings, fostering a deeper sense of collaboration and commitment to scientific excellence. ๐Ÿ“–

Principal Investigator of the Freshwater Systems Ecology Laboratory (FSEL). A specialist in freshwater science, aquatic food web dynamics, and plankton community ecology, she holds a Ph.D. in life science at National Taiwan University (2023) and an M. Sc. in biological sciences at the University of Santo Tomas (2015). Her research extensively explores the impacts of environmental factors, such as tropical cyclones and aquaculture, on freshwater ecosystems and plankton trophic relationships.โฃ

Dr. dela Paz is a multi-awarded scholar and researcher, notably receiving the 2023 Deanโ€™s Award from the National Taiwan University College of Life Science and the 2024 ASEAN Blue Innovation Challenge award from the UNDP. She is a recipient of the Balik Scientist Program Award 2024 for mid-term engagement from DOST-PCAARRD. Her work is widely published in high-impact journals, including Freshwater Biology and Zoological Studies, reflecting her commitment to advancing ecological data and freshwater resource management.โฃ

A faculty member at the Department of Biological Sciences, College of Science, University of Santo Tomas (UST). A specialist in plant systematics and taxonomy. He holds a Master of Science in Molecular Biology at the University of Santo Tomas and a Doctorate at the University of Bayreuth in Germany.โฃ

Dr. Chavez has authored numerous taxonomic novelties, including the description of the new genus Achilleanthus and several species in the genus Timonius. His professional contributions include the preparation of botanical illustrations and extensive field observations across the Philippines.โฃ
