A BIG STEP FORWARD FOR MALITBOG’S OCEAN FUTURE!

We are thrilled and grateful to share the very positive response from the Municipal Council of LGU Malitbog during the recent presentation of our marine conservation project proposal.

The council members expressed strong support and appreciation for GREEN Inc. ’s vision to restore coral reefs, control Crown-of-Thorns Starfish outbreaks, and conduct underwater clean-ups through community-based collaboration.

As a startup NGO with very limited resources, this support from our local government gives us the strength and motivation to keep moving forward. It reinforces what we’ve always believed: when local leaders and community volunteers work together, great things can happen beneath the surface.

We’re especially excited to welcome new marine biology graduates who are eager to get their hands full with real, on-the-ground experience doing the right things for the ocean and the future of marine conservation. Their passion, fresh perspective, and willingness to learn will help shape the next generation of environmental stewards.

Together with trained local divers including those who have undergone dive training with Plongeurs du Monde we are building a team that dives with purpose and works with heart.

This is just the beginning. With the solid backing of LGU Malitbog and a growing network of passionate individuals, we’re more ready than ever to bring this vision to life. Daghang salamat for believing in this shared mission for our reefs and coastal communities!

Possible Double Act in Sogod Bay?

Some intriguing news from our recent reef monitoring dives: an overseas echinoderm expert, after reviewing photo submissions, believes we may be looking at two different species of crown of thorns sea stars (COTS) in Sogod Bay our usual Acanthaster solaris and the less commonly encountered Acanthaster brevispinus, known for its shorter spines and flatter profile.

The photos shown here taken during in one of our COTS monitoring dive caught the expert’s attention. The specimen displayed several traits more typical of A. brevispinus: short, blunt spines, a less inflated body disc, and fewer arms than expected from the more familiar A. solaris.

Important to note:
• This ID is based on visual assessment only no physical samples or genetic work has been done yet.
• A. brevispinus is known to prefer sandy or soft-bottom habitats and is not a major coral predator, unlike its coral-devouring cousin A. solaris.
• Having both species in the bay if confirmed could mean different ecological roles and may influence how we approach COTS monitoring and control.

CALL FOR PHOTOS & OBSERVATIONS
If you're diving in the area:

1. Capture clear, close-up shots of any COTS you encounter whole body and spine detail.
2. Note depth, substrate, and location.
3. Share your photos with us or tag the page we’ll continue forwarding them to our expert contacts abroad.

This discovery, while still preliminary and conservative, opens exciting questions about Sogod Bay's marine biodiversity. Let’s keep observing, learning, and protecting our reefs.

COTs Monitoring & Culling Update – Abgao, Malitbog
Organized by GREEN Inc.

Great news from the reef! Yesterday we completed a follow up dive in Abgao to assess the Crown of Thorns starfish (COTs) situation almost one month after our first culling effort. The results are encouraging:

• Notable drop in COTs density compared to last month
• Healthy coral heads showing signs of recovery
• Only a handful of adult COTs required injection

These gains prove that consistent monitoring and quick response really work.

What’s next?

• Weekly reef sweeps in Abgao to keep numbers down
• Rotating checks of past outbreak sites (San Antonio, Cantamuac, and others)
• Ongoing data sharing with LGU

How you can help:

• Certified divers: message us to join a culling/monitoring slot
• Non divers: spread the word, share this post, or donate reef safe vinegar and supplies
• Everyone: advocate for proper waste management and reef friendly practices in our barangays

Every small action adds up to a healthier reef. Let’s keep the momentum going!

Crown-of-Thorns Response Update – San Antonio & Abgao, Malitbog Led by GREEN, Inc.

Today’s Crown-of-Thorns starfish (COTs) response dive was successfully conducted, thanks to the combined efforts of passionate divers, local institutions, and community supporters dedicated to protecting Malitbog’s coral reefs.

In addition to the previously identified outbreak in San Antonio, we have now confirmed an active COTs outbreak in Abgao. Our team was able to inject and neutralize the majority of the COTs encountered at both sites.

While time constraints prevented us from visiting a few other sites with past outbreak histories, GREEN, Inc. is committed to continuing the monitoring and culling operations in the days ahead.

We extend our sincere appreciation to:

• Malitbog MENRO Office for their support
• Incoming Mayor Kenneth Blair Oben, who, although not on-site, offered key assistance and expressed his full commitment to supporting future marine conservation initiatives in the municipality
• The Marine Biology Department of SLSU Bontoc, whose team provided technical support and valuable fieldwork contributions during the dive

This activity reflects how strong collaboration among local leaders, academic institutions, and civil society groups can make a real impact in preserving our marine ecosystems. The work continues—and today’s efforts are a reminder that Malitbog’s reefs are worth protecting.

Thank you to all the volunteers, partners, and allies who helped make this possible.
