Break Out the Sunscreen: Batch 1 Marine Bio Interns Have Arrived!
History has officially been made in Malitbog! We are thrilled to welcome the very first batch of Marine Biology student interns at GREEN, Inc., made possible through a wonderful collaboration with LGU Malitbog!
For years, these students have been staring at fish diagrams in textbooks. Now? They’re getting up close and personal with the real thing and quickly realizing that wild marine life doesn't always stay still for a species ID!
What They Think They’ll Be Doing vs. What They’re Actually Doing:
The Expectation: Gliding gracefully underwater, taking aesthetic coral selfies, and communicating with sea turtles.
The Reality:
Pointy and Validation Pain: So far, they’re hard at work running substrate and invertebrate identification. That means literally pointing at tiny patches of reef underwater and validating every single point on their slate while trying not to drift away in the current!
Coral Restoration Work: Getting hands-on with coral fragments and learning that "underwater gardening" involves a surprisingly high amount of arm strength.
Why This Matters
This internship isn't just about getting dirt under their fingernails (or sand in every piece of gear they own). By running pointy and validation on substrates, these students are gathering crucial baseline data that directly informs coastal management policies with LGU Malitbog. They aren't just learning science they're doing science that protects our marine ecosystems for the long haul.
