This Is Abgao Malitbog

This Is Abgao Malitbog It is a digital platform of Barangay Abgao, Malitbog, Southern Leyte. We are not directly affiliated The barangay was ruled by its chieftain called kapitan.

As the ancestors, in the early years, the word "Abgao" was named after the Abgao or Alagaw tree that can be seen in abundance on the coastal side of the barangay and even at the mountainous area. To this day, we see Abgao trees when we drive or walk on the streets. The barangay of Abgao came into existence in the early part of the 18th century as proven from the inscription on the stone walls of t

he ruins of the watchtower located at the southern portion of barangay Abgao (now Barangay Sabang) which were constructed in the year 1820. No traces could be found as to the name of the kapitan, though at later time prior to the Spanish-American War, two kapitans were known in the locality by the name of Kapitan Tenio Base and Kapitan Esteban Piramide. During the American regime, when Kapitan Gadi Sescon won as barangay kapitan, the barangay was reorganized. The southern and northern portion of the barangay was separated to form the barangay of Abgao Uno and Abgao Dos. Over the years, through the act of barangay decree and further amended by the municipal decree, Barangay Abgao Uno is now called Sabang and Barangay Abgao Dos remained Barangay Abgao.

LOOK: Here is the latest data of the population of barangays in the Municipality of Malitbog, based on the 2024 Census of the Philippine Statistics Authority.

Of the 37 barangays of Malitbog, Barangay San Vicente had the biggest population with 1,588 and Barangay Fatima had the smallest population with 134.

The total population in the Municipality of Malitbog is 21,691 making it the 8th most populous municipality in the Province of Southern Leyte.
