What are some of the myths people believe about the Boracay Bridge? Weโ€™re reaking them down one by one.

Todayโ€™s myth: The bridge will benefit everyone.
The reality? An SMHC-owned bridge will divert revenue away from locals and centralize billions into outside corporate pockets.
Currently, the portsโ€™ income funds municipality needs, circulating wealth for all Aklanonsโ€™ benefit.
Large scale projects such as this will only leave local communities behind, benefitting only those who control land and capital.

What are some of the myths people believe about the Boracay Bridge? Weโ€™re breaking them down one by one.ย

Todayโ€™s myth: The bridge is a critical infrastructure project.
The reality? True critical infrastructure projects should strengthen resilience, sustainability, and equitable access, SMCโ€™s bridge project does NOT align with these or Boracayโ€™s current limitations.
Letโ€™s not forget this project was UNSOLICITED and can potentially undermine the islandโ€™s carrying capacity principles.

What are some of the myths people believe about the Boracay Bridge? Weโ€™re breaking them down one by one.ย

Todayโ€™s myth: The bridge will fix sewerage issues.

The reality? There is currently no existing infrastructure on mainland Malay that can process Boracayโ€™s wastewater, which will only burden neighboring towns and creates an environmental risk rather than solving it.
The goal should be to capacitate the island to process its wastewater independently.

Bridge construction poses a severe ecological threat to Boracayโ€™s fragile sandbar. Each column installation excavates roughly 800 metric tons of sediment. This causes massive siltation that actively degrades nearby marine sanctuaries, mangrove parks, and shorelines.

The bridge site is a vital fish migration corridor and breeding ground that sustains local fisherfolk. The decades-old boat transport system provides livelihoods with dignity, while many other sectorsโ€”including transport operators, cargo handlers, and vendorsโ€”risk being displaced by San Miguel's project.

Under San Miguelโ€™s business plans, Boracay becomes the main selling point while receiving little or zero in return. Economic activities are structured to take place primarily within SMC-owned properties on the mainland, limiting the benefits that flow back to the island and its communities.

Letโ€™s celebrate the unique biodiversity of Boracay beyond its white sand beach on World Environment Day!

This yearโ€™s theme is: โ€œInspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future,โ€ which reminds us that everything weโ€™re doing is for future generations to continue enjoying our beloved island home.

Humble Islands PH is proud to be a part of the We Are Aware campaign, led by Friends of the Flying Foxes Boracay, that aims to shine a light on the full ecosystem that makes this island truly special, including our beach forests (thanks to the bats ๐Ÿฆ‡ ), coral reefs, seagrass, mangroves, and the fauna!

We need to stand up for our planet and for places like Boracay Island - not just as places we visit, but as ecosystems we all have a responsibility to protect.

What are some of the myths people believe about the Boracay Bridge? We're breaking them down one by one.

Today's myth: Access through the bridge will be free and cheaper for everyone.
The reality? The bridge is being operated by a private company for profit. Toll fees will be added on top of the environmental, terminal, and regulatory fees that already exist. These costs will cascade through transport, goods, and services, raising prices for residents, workers, and tourists alike. That is not cheaper access.
According to DPWH's own Project Information Memorandum from 2025, users will have to pass through seven touchpoints just to cross.

Letโ€™s not lose sight of what we stand for. Last weekโ€™s news sparked a lot of discussions that left many asking: what now?

We want to highlight that our cause goes beyond just opposing the San Miguelโ€™s bridge project. So the fight continues.

We are in this together. Our collective efforts have proven that our voices matter and make a difference.

Padayon kita (letโ€™s continue).

What are some of the myths people believe about the Boracay Bridge? Weโ€™re breaking them down one by one.

Todayโ€™s myth: The bridge is needed for emergencies.

The reality? The nearest Level 2 hospital is still 1.5 hours away in Kalibo, and the nearest Level 3 hospital is 5 hours away in Iloilo. A bridge doesnโ€™t change that math.

What we actually need is to upgrade medical facilities on the island itself, along with streamlining the sea ambulance services that already exist.

Building a massive fixed structure for occasional emergencies is not a solution, especially when it risks permanently damaging our coral reefs, beaches, and future in the process. Invest in the right infrastructure.

What are some of the myths people believe about the bridge? Here weโ€™ll be covering some of them and the realities they actually present.ย

Todayโ€™s myth: The bridge will solve Boracayโ€™s solid waste problem. In fact, it will shift the problem to neighboring communities, which is not the solution. Instead, invest in proper MRFs on Boracay and stop outsourcing our pollution.
