Cargo Port palang yan.

Boracay holds a People Symposium on June 4, 2026 where the voice of the community is heard, where a strong opposition is expressed, where the island's awareness has manifested, where the people is united.

𝟭) 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻
Bridge construction poses a severe ecological threat to Boracay’s fragile sandbar. Each column installation excavates roughly 800 metric tons of sediment. This causes massive siltation that actively degrades nearby marine sanctuaries, mangrove parks, and shorelines.

𝟮) 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗱
The bridge site is a vital fish migration corridor and breeding ground that sustains local fisherfolk. The decades-old boat transport system provides livelihoods with dignity, while many other sectors—including transport operators, cargo handlers, and vendors—risk being displaced by San Miguel's project.

𝟯) 𝗟𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗹 𝗩𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀
It violates the provisions on the Local Code of the Philippines for not complying the with consultation requirement and the endorsement of the Local Government Unit outside the failure to present a comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessment.

𝟰) 𝗟𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘆
The occupation of the community’s traditional and communal spaces deprives its people of the ability to practice their cultural activities and preserve their way of life.

𝟱) 𝗡𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀
Under San Miguel’s business plans, Boracay becomes the main selling point while receiving little or zero in return. Economic activities are structured to take place primarily within SMC-owned properties on the mainland, limiting the benefits that flow back to the island and its communities.

This is one important takeaway from Committee Hearing conducted by SB Malay yesterday, June 5, 2026.

While the concept of a bridge connecting Boracay Island and the mainland is identified in the Municipality of Malay's CLUP 2013–2022, any specific project proposal must still undergo the required planning, technical, environmental, legal, and stakeholder review processes before implementation.

"The Boracay Bridge proposal by San Miguel is an unsolicited project under PPP arrangement which is therefore subject to separate technical, environmental, economic, social, legal, and policy evaluations and approval by the concerned authorities before implementation", they added.

THE STRONG VOICE OF BORACAY AGAINST THE BRIDGE HAS REACHED CONGRESS

Through the ML Partylist, and through the initiative of Cong. Leila de Lima, House Resolution No. 1021 has been filed urging the Committee on Public Works and Highways to conduct an inquiry, in aid of legislation, into the implementation of the proposed Boracay Bridge.

The resolution seeks to determine compliance with the Local Government Code, particularly on the conduct of a comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and meaningful community consultation with affected stakeholders.

The House officially acknowledged receipt of the resolution on May 18, 2026.

Thank you, Cong. Leila de Lima, for taking this important step for Boracay and for ensuring that the voices of the island’s people are heard.
