Operation Paglingap: Typhoon Basyang Relief and Humanitarian Response

“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”
— Galatians 6:2

Love and service came alive as the clubs of Inner Wheel Philippines-District 385 united on February 21, 2026 for Operation Paglingap, a heartfelt relief mission led by District Chairperson Peggy Ann Perez Sebastian. The initiative showed how strong women, working together, can bring light to communities facing dark and difficult days.
The mission reached 150 families in Pala-o, Iligan City, whose homes and lives were deeply affected by the typhoon. In the midst of loss and hardship, the presence of Inner Wheel ladies became a source of comfort beyond what words could express. Every warm smile, reassuring conversation, and helping hand conveyed a powerful message of solidarity , that no family faced the crisis alone and that compassionate support stood alongside them during their time of need.
With hearts moved by compassion, the District lovingly distributed essential assistance to every beneficiary. Each family received sleeping mats where weary bodies could finally rest, sacks of rice to keep meals on the table, sturdy pails and basins for everyday household needs, dippers for easier access to water and better sanitation, clean drinking water for safety and health, and grocery packs filled with daily essentials. These were more than relief goods, they were quiet messages of care, dignity, and solidarity, given with respect and sincere concern.
Beyond serving the community, District 385 also embraced its own Inner Wheel family. Monetary assistance was extended to five members who were gravely affected by the typhoon. This thoughtful act reflected a sisterhood that stands together not only in service, but also in times of personal hardship. Within the sisterhood, bonds of empathy and support ensure that every member is strengthened by the presence of one another.
This meaningful mission was made possible through the generous support and shared dedication of the different clubs across the District: the Inner Wheel Club of West Cagayan de Oro, IWC Pagadian, IWC Uptown Cagayan de Oro, IWC Metro Valencia, IWC Ranaw Circle of Friends, IWC Yllana Bay, IWC Lanao del Norte, IWC Masterson Cagayan de Oro, and the IWC of Golden Friendship. This was also supported by Inner Wheel Philippines National Board of Trustees. Each club offered not only resources, but hearts ready to serve and hands ready to lift others in their time of greatest need.
This Operation Paglingap project, chaired by Club Presidents Lena Ferraris and Ave Danganan, became a beautiful reminder that service is love made visible. When hearts unite with purpose, kindness multiplies and healing begins.
A timeless reflection reminds: “To serve is to touch a life forever.” Through acts of compassion and unwavering dedication, hearts were lifted, courage rekindled, and hope renewed for all those affected by Typhoon Basyang. May this gesture of care embody the true spirit of the theme: STEP-UP and Lead by Example, inspiring strength, resilience, and the confidence to rebuild, rise, and continue making a meaningful difference in the lives of family, community, and one another.

Today, we gather to commemorate International Women’s Day—a day intended to celebrate the immense strides women have made in every corner of our society. But as we stand here, we must confront a sobering truth. At our current rate of progress, it will take decades, or even centuries, to achieve true economic and political parity.
We are operating on a landscape that remains broken and uneven. We often confuse equality with equity. Equality is giving everyone the same pair of shoes; equity is giving everyone a pair that actually fits. On this day, we must ask ourselves: are we actually building a world that fits, or are we just using "equality" as a comfortable buzzword?

I once believed that the obstacles women faced were simply "women’s problems"—challenges that could be overcome if we just worked harder or "leaned in" further. But the reality is that our systems—from our corporate boardrooms to the very halls of our legislature—were designed in an era when women were not even in the room.
We see the evidence of this design flaw when those in power forget the weight of their words. Just this month, during a formal House hearing, we witnessed a staggering example of this from a Congressman. In an attempt to make a legal point, he shared a vulgar and objectifying "analogy" regarding actress

This was not just a "fictitious situation" or a legal analogy. It was a public act of sexual objectification by a statesman in a venue meant for serious national discourse. When a leader uses such language, it sends a clear message: that women are still viewed as objects of desire rather than equals in leadership. It reminds us that this is not an "us versus them" battle—it is a battle for the collective dignity of "us" as a whole.

On this Women’s Day, I am not asking for a polite applause. I am asking for intentional, uncomfortable action:

In your meetings, actively elevate the voices that are being talked over. Recognition must be based on contribution, not volume.
Redefine Leadership: We must stop asking "Why aren't women applying?" and start asking "Why are our environments still hostile to them?"

We often think of it as a call for equality between men and women. But today, I want to highlight something just as important — the way women treat and support one another. Empowerment does not only happen when we challenge inequality from others. It also happens in the way we stand beside our fellow women.

Too often, instead of lifting each other up, we fall into the habit of criticizing, comparing, or even gossiping about one another. Without realizing it, we sometimes become part of the very problem we are trying to fight. International Women’s Day should remind us that real strength comes from solidarity.

Imagine the impact if every woman chose encouragement over criticism, support over judgment, and understanding over gossip.

When a woman struggles, she doesn’t need whispers behind her back—she needs another woman beside her, offering help, guidance, and compassion. Each of us has weaknesses. Each of us has faced moments of doubt or failure. Instead of pointing out those weaknesses, we can help one another grow through them. When one woman rises, it does not take anything away from another woman. In fact, it creates a path for many more to rise.

Let us create spaces where women feel safe to learn, to try, to fail, and to succeed without fear of being torn down by their own community. Let us be the kind of women who celebrate another woman’s success, who defend those who are criticized unfairly, and who offer a hand when someone is struggling.

Today, let us make a simple promise: to speak kindly about one another, to stop gossip where it begins, and to replace judgment with support. Because when women stand firmly with one another, we become an unstoppable force for good.

International Women’s Day is not just about demanding respect from the world. It is also about showing respect, kindness, and unity among ourselves. So let us stand together, lift one another, and build a future where every woman knows she is not alone. Thank you
