54 years ago, the Philippines entered a dark chapter in its history. Today, we remember the events that unfolded, and the people who stood, struggled, and sacrificed for our democracy.

Today, we honor the stories of those whose courage and sacrifices paved the way for the restoration of our democratic freedoms.

As part of our commemoration of the declaration of Martial Law, the Political Science Society presents a revisitation of a significant chapter in our nation’s history and remembers the people and their experiences that shaped the country’s continuing struggle for democracy.

Through these images, stories, and voices, may we pause to remember, reflect, and understand the past— not simply as a chapter in history, but as a reminder of the freedoms and responsibilities we carry today.

𝗠𝗔𝗥𝗧𝗜𝗔𝗟 𝗟𝗔𝗪 @54 | 𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗗𝗦 𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗥𝗘𝗠𝗔𝗜𝗡 🇵🇭

Yesterday, our speakers shared insights, reflections, and stories that reminded us why remembering Martial Law matters—and why the struggle for democracy continues to shape our understanding of freedom, courage, and nationhood.

From their powerful messages, we gathered some of the words that stood out and stayed with us.

𝙍𝙚𝙖𝙙. 𝙍𝙚𝙛𝙡𝙚𝙘𝙩. 𝙍𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙢𝙗𝙚𝙧. Because when we remember the voices who came before us, we also carry forward the lessons they left behind.

As the commemoration of the declaration of Martial Law approached, let us shine a light on the individuals who played a vital role in our nation’s struggle for democracy— especially those whose courage and sacrifices often remained unseen.

Beyond the names found in history books are countless individuals whose courage and sacrifices helped shape the struggle for freedom. Students, workers, journalists, and ordinary Filipinos who resisted in their own ways played an important role in keeping the pursuit of democracy alive.

As we remember Martial Law, may we also remember those whose names may not be widely known but whose sacrifices helped pave the way for the freedoms we continue we uphold today.
