๐—ฅ๐—˜๐—”๐——: Will AI take Filipino jobs? The answer depends on what we do now

Will artificial intelligence take our jobs? It is a question many Filipino workers are asking. It was also central to discussions at the 2026 Future of Work Forum organised by the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP).

AI and clean energy may appear separate, but they raise the same question: can the Philippines turn technology and investment into better jobs and better lives?

Prosperity requires skills, strong institutions, productive businessesโ€”and shared benefits.

The better question is whether the Philippines can prepare people for new opportunities while protecting those most at risk.

Supported by the EU BAEP-CRESCENT Project, funded by the European Union in the Philippines and implemented by the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP) under the Bangsamoro Agri-Enterprise Programme (BAEP), the gathering brings together key actors to advance private sector development across BARMM.

The project supports MSMEs and producers in the agri-fishery value chains and Halal sector, while creating opportunities to strengthen investment and inclusive economic growth across the region.

ECCP President Dr. Diana Edralin delivered the welcome remarks, setting the stage for discussions on unlocking greater private sector potential in BARMM and the broader BIMP-EAGA region.

๐—ฅ๐—˜๐—”๐——: Positioning the Philippines for the next cycle of global capital

Southeast Asia had a strong year for foreign investment in 2025, with regional inflows passing $240 billion, up from roughly $222 billion. According to the United Nations Trade and Developmentโ€™s figures, the Philippines moved the other way, easing around 4 percent to $9 billion and holding sixth place for another year.

The classification tables tell a different story. In July, the World Bank moved the Philippines to upper-middle-income status, ending close to four decades in the lower-middle-income group, on gross national income per capita of $4,850 against a threshold of $4,636. Its reasoning matters more than the milestone: broad-based expansion, with growth averaging 5.8 percent a year over five years across all major industries rather than one sector boom. That is not a claim about household prosperity, which is longer and harder work, but about the composition and durability of growth, which is what a long-term allocator assesses.

A look at whatโ€™s ahead for tax administration and compliance! ๐Ÿ’กโœ๐Ÿป

On 13 August 2026, the ECCPโ€™s inaugural ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ” ๐“๐š๐ฑ ๐…๐จ๐ซ๐ฎ๐ฆ brought together tax experts, business leaders, and government officials for timely discussions on tax reforms, digitalisation, audit readiness, and emerging tax frameworks.

With the theme โ€œFrom Preparation to Protection: Navigating Tax Compliance in a Changing Landscape,โ€ BIR Commissioner Charlito Martin โ€œCharlieโ€ Mendoza delivered the keynote address, setting the tone for discussions on the BIRโ€™s priorities for a more transparent, digital, and taxpayer-focused tax administration.

The forum also featured insights from officials of the Bureau of Internal Revenue Philippines (BIR), including Deputy Commissioner Atty. Marissa O. Cabreros; Mr. Glen Alde, Head of the BIRโ€™s VAT on Digital Services Project; Deputy Commissioner Atty. Larry M. Barcelo; Assistant Commissioner Raquel Cristina V. Baltazar; and Assistant Commissioner Mariza R. Uy.

Industry perspectives were also shared by Mr. Senen Quizon, Business Tax Leader of Deloitte Philippines, who discussed Digitalization & Risk Management, and Mr. Anil Rajanala of Cygnet. One on e-invoicing readiness.

In another key session, Atty. Carlo Navarro of Deloitte Philippines discussed the Qualified Domestic Minimum Top-up Tax (QDMTT) and its implications for Philippine tax incentives.

ECCP Vice President Ruben Camba opened the forum by highlighting the importance of public-private collaboration in strengthening compliance, transparency, and the countryโ€™s investment climate.

Panel and Q&A sessions moderated by Atty. Benedicta Du-Baladad, Co-chair of the ECCP Tax and Financial Services Committee, and Atty. Alden C. Labaguis, Vice Chair of the ECCP Tax and Financial Services and Customs and Logistics Committees, also explored practical approaches to managing tax risks in an increasingly digital and evolving regulatory environment.

The ECCP thanks all speakers, participants, and partners for contributing to a meaningful exchange on building a more transparent, efficient, and competitive tax ecosystem in the Philippines.

๐—Ÿ๐—ข๐—ข๐—ž: ECCP Vice President Mr. Lars Wittig took part in Plenary 3, โ€œGeopolitics & Trade: Navigating the Global Supply Chain,โ€ during the 35th Mindanao Business Conference today, 13 August 2026.

The session explored how evolving regional geopolitics are shaping trade routes and the global supply chain, with particular attention to the implications for businesses and the opportunities available to MSMEs.

Mr. Wittig shared perspectives on the importance of understanding regional trade dynamics and making better use of regional trade agreements and duty-free arrangements to facilitate cross-border trade and strengthen business competitiveness.

The discussion highlighted the need for businesses to remain adaptable amid shifts in the regional and global economic landscape, while leveraging existing trade frameworks to access markets and build more resilient supply chains.

ECCPโ€™s participation reflects the Chamberโ€™s continued commitment to promoting greater economic integration, trade opportunities, and stronger business linkages between the Philippines, Europe, and the wider ASEAN region.
